Throughout class, we were tasked to look at different examples of media and ask questions about how they interacted with society and the people.
For this first media curation, I was tasked to analyze a YouTube channel with above fifty-thousand followers, and question how this influencer keeps individuality and intimacy with their fans.
1. Tim/ Tim Guitar Lessons
2. 52.7k
3. https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCTCS78UpWHrkHhS2-2oX6ag.
5. Tim teaches his viewers an in-depth tutorial on how to play one of my favorite songs- Daylight by Watchouse on guitar.
Tim Guitar teaches his viewers country and folk style songs, using an easy to follow step-by-step method. Tim builds a relationship with his fans through providing tutorials on songs that most other guitar YouTubers do not have. Most of tim’s videos are on folky, country music that not too many people have heard of, and that keeps his viewers coming back for more. Tim also explains how to play the songs very clearly and thoroughly; this makes his fans want to some back for more, as he is a very skilled teacher. Tim demonstrates intimacy with his fans by thanking them at the end of most of his videos, and taking requests from his viewers to make videos on their favorite songs. This gives the fans a sense of being seen or heard, and overall tightens up the fanbase as a whole. Tim demonstrates authenticity by making his videos on songs that are not too popular, or songs that no one else has covered on youtube. This makes his channel a diamond in the rough for fans of his particular musical niche, and keeps his channel authentic, by not copying anyone else. If you play guitar, I highly recommend you check him out. He is one of my favorite YouTubers.
For this next curation, we were tasked with finding an example of “new media in the media,” and questioning wether it was a utopian or dystopian viewpoint of such.
Nerve
This is a trailer to the 2016 movie “Nerve.” It is a dystopian view on how technology can turn people into fame hungry monsters.
We went over some examples of dystopian and utopian trailers, books, movies and videos of technology. The first thing that popped into my head when this assignment was announced in class was the 2016 horror/thriller movie Nerve. This movie is about a highschool senior Vee, who is tired of “living her life on the sidelines.” Her friends peer pressure her to join the new popular game Nerve; which challenges players to accept emotionally-jarring truths, or life-risking dares. Fueled by the competition, money, and popularity that follows suit, Vee continues to play while Nerve takes a turn for the worse. Vee finds herself in the finale of the game where her love interest is forced to shoot her. Vee seemingly dies after taking the bullet, but it was staged to expose the dystopian reality of anonymous viewers daring such evil tasks out of entertainment. They eventually return to normal life and the creataors of the game are arrested. Now, this movie is pretty cheesy, but it is a very good take on the “evil technology” genre. I would consider this a very dystopian take on technology- the fans dare the final contestants to shoot each other… If you have not watched this, it is not a terrible movie, but it came out directly on Netflix so that tells you how it will be.
