The Media’s Influence on Cybersecurity

With the media being so vast, in terms of movies, it is hard to gauge fantasy from reality. This can be true in many cases. When joining the Navy, I saw so many commercials of Navy SEALs and special forces during training, and it always ends with showing a carrier strike group. In reality, the carrier strike group makes up most of the Navy, not special forces. This is the same thing for cybersecurity. You always see how easy it is to crack a password in the movies, and how fast paced it is, and it seems so easy. Nothing can stop the hacker, right? Wrong. Password cracking, social engineering and reconnaissance all take quite a bit of time. Cracking someone’s hash, or password takes a bit of time, depending on how long you are willing to take. Social engineering takes time and patience, you cannot raise suspicion, or they will likely catch on to what is happening. But the part that will take the longest is reconnaissance. Though it may be easy to conduct a vulnerability test on your own server, conducting a vulnerability test on someone else’s server will take time if you don’t want to be seen. Finally, people run into problems during a hack all of the time for a number of reasons, which would not be as simple to recover from than what you see in the movies.
