Journal Entry 14

Assignment Description: “Andriy Slynchuk has described eleven things Internet users do that may be illegal. Review what the author says and write a paragraph describing the five most serious violations and why you think those offenses are serious.”

When looking at the list, the violation that stood out to me immediately was collecting information about children. Not only is it a blatant violation of privacy rights, it is targeted against a demographic that doesn’t have the resources to protect themselves and a broad category that can include lots of other crimes. The next was illegal searches on the internet because of how many crimes that can include or assist. The third most serious violation I think is faking your identity because it includes identity fraud and phishing scams that can severely harm a person’s financial wellbeing. Fourth was cyberbullying because it has many harmful effects on the psychological well being of its victims and additionally diminishes their ability to feel safe using online cyberspaces that are essentially necessary in modern life. Lastly, sharing information of others stood out as another serious violation. Sharing personal information and data about other people can lead to all of the other serious violations, aiding in various crimes and privacy violations.
