Hacker Rates 12 Hacking Scenes In Movies And TV | How Real Is It?“
I think media depictions on hacking and cybersecurity have a negative impact on the
public perception of cybersecurity by overcomplicating the technology. For example, the James Bond clip showing advanced GUI-based technology makes hacking seem incomprehensible to the average person. Even in more accurate shows, like Mr. Robot, hacking can skip steps and be done in a far faster than reasonably expected time. The reason these depictions hurt the public perception of cybersecurity is by making hacking seem too all-powerful and hard to defend against. It distorts public opinion from what the most common dangers are. Some media, like the Ocean’s 8 spear phishing scene, do depict more common everyday threats people are likely to face. However, the overall general depiction of hacking makes cybersecurity seem like something far too advanced and difficult for the average person to ever be able to understand and reasonably enact in their lives.
