SPAN 202

Interpretive, Interpersonal, and Presentational Modes of Communication

Exploring Culture

This assignment really helped me gain an understanding of exploring culture practices. This activity was on lingo learning and called: 21- Contrasena Estrategia y texto. In this assignment we read a cultural context about the drink and costumes for drinking mate.

This assignment helped me better understand a cultural practice that doesn’t belong to me. Reading the article and then answering true or false questions really helped me to understand how much I was comprehending. This activity helped me understand how much transitions and passing them down orally is in Hispanic culture. In America we don’t have any traditions that involve a specific drink and how it is served, reading about this practice challenged what I knew about traditions. The story also explains how important legends are in Hispanic cultures which I found interesting.

Engaging in Communities

Engaging in your my immediate and global community is very important to me. While learning Spanish its important to communicate with other learners or Spanish speakers because it engages and brings people together.

In Spanish 202 we participated in discussion boards where we answers questions form our instructor in Spanish and then replied to 2 classmates posts. Participating in these assignments allowed me to communicate with other people who are also learning Spanish. While completing these assignments I learned from my other classmates which helped me in the long run. Getting to read other peoples posts was very engaging and challenge me to comprehend and then respond appropriately.

Interpersonal Communication

In Spanish 202 I completed two talk abroad’s total. Both times I spoke to a native Spanish speaker from Spanish speaking countries. These talks broadened my knowledge of the Spanish language.

Completing two talk abroad’s was very beneficial to learning Spanish for me. My first conversation I was very nervous and stuttered a lot. My partner was vert patient and helped me through the conversation. When it came time for my second TalkAbroad I was much more confident and got to enjoy the activity. My partner and I discussed Influencers and had a lot in common, making the conversation fun. Through these TalkAbroad I gained confidence in speaking Spanish and my abilities to comprehend. Presentational Speaking

In Spanish 202 we were assigned projects where we would record ourselves talking in Spanish on a specific subject. This video is me speaking about Climate control and subtitle foods.

Completing these projects made me have to translate english into Spanish to get my point across. It challenged me to speak Spanish for a long amount of time without anyone else to go off of unlike TalkAbroad. Creating these videos helped me become better at pronouncing Spanish words and not stuttering. I excelled at pronunciation towards the end of creating these projects and my spanking skills grew all around. Presentational Writing

In Spanish 202 we had plenty of presentational writing activities. One example is preparing for project on lingo where I would construct a writing about a certain subject. For this preparation the subject was stereotypes.

This assignment helped me prepare for projects where I would be speaking for a long time. This required me to write an outline on lingolearning. This challenged me to translate English to Spanish. This preparation also helped me overcome using vocabulary appropriately. This assignment also broadened my ability to discuss stereotypes in Spanish.

Interpretive Listening

This activity we had to listen to words in Spanish and write down exactly what we heard. This required me to pay attention and practice Spanish spelling.

This activity from lingolearning challenged my Spanish knowledge. This activity help me grow in areas like spelling because I had to spell the Spanish word right with no word bank. It took me two tries to get all the spelling correct. This activity also challenged my listening skills as I had to listen closely to determine the word.

Interpretive Reading

Spanish 202 offered a lot of Interpretive Reading activities. My example is from lingolearning and required me to read a text in Spanish about a tradition and then answer true or false questions to see of we comprehended the given text.

I found this Reading activity challenging because of the length of the text. It was a lot to understand and translate correctly. I overcame this by taking my time and breaking down the text into pieces. I found the story I read very interesting because it was about the costume of drinking mate, which is so different from any American traditions. With each reading assignment comprehension got easier and I was able to complete the activity more efficiently.
