In materials management I had gotten the opportunity to do some inventory stocking. I had gone over some of the inventories for the four units on the first floor as well as the second and third floor. What they had me do is go early in the morning, or as soon as I got in, and take stock of what the units had. I would then figure out what they needed and then help restock each unit according their need. After that, I was able to check the inventory versus what we had bought. If there were any errors, they would contact the vendor to straighten it out. However, there were no errors.
I then moved to the chaplain’s department. I shadowed the lead pastor that was on duty that day. We went to different patients’ rooms and discussed any issues or concerns they had. We would also discuss the any prayers they wanted and if they did not want any prayers then we would accept that and move onto the next patient. We did not only do this at Lake Taylor, but we also went to see the patients that were in the ED at Sentara Leigh. These patients are originally staying at Lake Taylor, but they have complications that Sentara would be better able to do it. After this I went to interview Mr. Orsini (CEO/Administrator). I asked him a couple questions about what it took to run a hospital and what attitude he intentionally takes in running this business.
I also shadowed a dietary aide. Her name was Sierra, and her job was to take care of helping the dieticians figure out what the patients desire to eat/what they can eat. I helped her talk to patients and discuss meal plan options. I also helped impute this into the system they use which is called Gerimenu. Gerimenu will make sure that anything they do not want to eat will not be printed on their ticket. This is why it is important to put this information in as soon as possible. I also was able to help the food services director with his quality management checkup. This is where he walks around checks to make sure the employees are in compliance with the rules set in place. We found a couple of simple fixes, such as changing the sanitation buckets after 4 hours so that it properly sanitizes. These are some of ways in which I was able to help and learn from these departments. It helped me understand what is needed from an administrator to ensure that the business is running properly.
