Financial Gain – first as it is the most prevalent motive in cybercrime driving attacks like ransomware and phishing.
Political Reasons – These motives rank second because of their significant impact seen in hacktivism and state-sponsored attacks.
Revenge – Third, unhappy employees or individuals often seek to harm organizations or people motivated by personal grievances.
Personal Challenge – Fourth, many hackers are driven by the thrill of bypassing security measures.
Curiosity – Fifth, unchecked curiosity can lead to breaches and unintended harm.
Recognition/Status – Sixth, as it is less about harm and more about achieving social prestige among peers.
Accidental/Unintentional Actions – Ranked last because while impactful the lack of intent reduces its traditional motives.
