Researchers can obtain comprehensive publicly available data on various data breaches that have been reported in the United States at PrivacyRights.org. This data includes information on the type of breach (hacking, insider threats, physical data loss, and more), the organizations affected (healthcare, government, education, etc.), and the quantity of records exposed. The information, which spans breaches from 2005 to the present, is obtained from official sources like as state attorneys general and the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services. This data can be analyzed by researchers to spot patterns, ascertain which sectors are most susceptible, and assess how well data security protocols are working. These insights can be used to forecast future breach risks, enhance cybersecurity procedures, and inform policy.
