Professional Goals

Goal 1: Gain Hands-On Experience with Administrative Operations
My first goal is to gain practical experience with the administrative functions that support the Richmond Behavioral Health Authority’s daily operations. While I have studied health services administration in the classroom, I want to better understand how tasks such as scheduling, reporting, documentation, and interdepartmental communication are managed in a real-world setting. I expect to achieve this goal by assisting with administrative projects in the CReST department and observing the workflow of my preceptor, other supervisors, and their administrator. Through this, I will learn how administrative staff contribute to the overall efficiency of the organization and ensure that client services run smoothly. By the end of my internship, I hope to confidently apply administrative practices in a professional healthcare environment.

Goal 2: Strengthen My Skills in Organizational Management and Leadership
Another key goal is to strengthen my organizational management and leadership skills in preparation for a future career in health services administration. Administrative leaders must be able to manage resources, delegate tasks, and oversee projects effectively, while also maintaining strong communication with both staff and clients. I expect to achieve this goal by observing how my preceptor, Anna Ryan, manages her responsibilities as a Program Supervisor and learning from her leadership style. I will also take initiative by completing assignments independently, staying organized, and seeking feedback on my performance. These experiences will help me develop the confidence and skills necessary to eventually manage administrative teams and programs in healthcare.

Goal 3: Apply Academic Knowledge of Health Services Administration to Real-World Workflows
My third goal is to apply the knowledge I have gained through my coursework in health services administration, management, and substance abuse prevention to administrative workflows at RBHA. For example, I have studied concepts such as organizational structure, program coordination, and the importance of efficiency in service delivery. During my internship, I will connect these concepts to the tasks I am assigned, such as assisting with data entry, organizing files, and gathering resources for the clinicians. By reflecting on these connections, I can strengthen my ability to translate classroom knowledge into workplace problem-solving. This goal will ensure that my academic background supports my practical growth as a future healthcare administrator.
