While growing up I’ve always had a thirst for knowledge about computers. That being said, my topic is Cyber Security. During my final years of high school, I knew this would be my dream occupation. I will be telling you why I am interested in this topic and why others should be. Cyber security is in our everyday lives. Every time you access the net you are prone to some type of exposure or threat.
The field of cybersecurity has been growing and will continue to grow over time. /; Cybersecurity is the practice of being protected against the unlawful or unauthorized use of electronic data, or the measures taken to achieve this. Almost everything that’s connected to the internet has some tie to cybersecurity. If others were to go on your phone or any device matter of fact and access something using your personal information more than likely there’s something protecting. Your own images, messages, etc that you have on your phone are protected by some sort of cyberware.
The reason I’m interested in this topic is mainly because of how many jobs are becoming available for this career. According to Steve Morgan, at the end of 2021, there were 3.5 million unfilled cybersecurity jobs- enough to fill 50 NFL stadiums (Morgan, 2021). On top of all the job openings, this career can expand into many other fields. The job I’m hoping to acquire after all my years of sharpening my skills is security analyst. Security analysts are first responders in cybersecurity. They provide updates on cyber threats and make any adjustments necessary to protect the company. When it comes to cybersecurity threats, they are regarded as the last line of protection. Secondly, the average salary for this job is around $56.21 an hour or $117,000 annually. This is also another reason why this job is important to me because it deals with something I have an interest in, and it also pays well. In the near future, I plan to have a family and want to be financially stable so they won’t have to struggle as I did growing up. Lastly, the job can come with many benefits such as having a good work/life balance, working from home, etc. Working from home is something that I just started looking into and I wouldn’t mind it at all. These are a couple of reasons why I’m interested in this. Next, hopefully, I can get you to care about this topic.
You should care about cyber security because in today’s society we depend on technology every single day. Almost everyone in today’s time has a phone or some type of device they use for personal use. Today, online storage services are used to store data including social security numbers, credit card numbers, and bank account information. We depend on computer systems every day, whether you are an individual, small corporation, or large one. Corporations should use the NIST (National Institute of Standards and Technology) to develop a policy regarding security for their networks. The NIST helps organizations align and prioritize their activities to protect themselves from current and future threats, risks, and resources. The Framework Core includes five functions that work together to help you identify, protect, detect, respond, and recover. If you’re an individual and want to reduce the chance of getting your data leaked, you should use strong passwords for all of your personal information. Another thing that gets most people is random emails. It may not seem like it but according to the Cybersecurity & Infrastructure Security Agency, “More than 90% of successful cyber-attacks start with a phishing email (Cybersecurity & Infrastructure Security Agency, N/A).” This is why you should care about Cybersecurity especially if you want to own your own company.
In conclusion, this is what my topic is about, and hopefully, I got to share new information with you. I care about the safety of my personal data and the data of the organization that I work for in the future. I explained why this subject interests me and why others should too. Our daily lives include cyber security. You run the risk of being exposed or threatened in some way every time you browse the internet.
