Hacking in the Media

While technology has been an interesting subject in movies for a long time, cybersecurity in particular has become an increasingly popular topic in movies since sometime in the 80’s.  However, the media does not always necessarily portray the reality of the cybersecurity field, and what the best computer security habits and processes are.  There have also been movies that included graphics that could perhaps be described as being too flashy, along with hacking scenes that are not exactly realistic.  For example, some movies will include fake technological terminology, or additional 3D animations to computer screens.  Additionally, some movies include unsafe practices, such as investigating an unknown device outside of a lab environment, and other bad habits like shoulder surfing.

Sometimes there are some technical concepts that make it into cybersecurity movies, such as social engineering, malware and viruses, the dark web, encryption, and even ethical hacking (sometimes).  Although hacking can be portrayed in a somewhat realistic way sometimes, there is still a gap between movies and reality.  One of the things that movies usually do not accurately portray is the technical skills necessary to actually hack in real life.  Because in reality, it should not be that easy to hack into computers and networks that have been effectively configured and secured.

Regardless of the accuracy of what is shown in movies, sometimes the occurrence of hacking in the media can serve as a way to ultimately raise awareness about the importance of cybersecurity.  Furthermore, the media could even influence some individuals by motivating them to pursue a career in the cybersecurity field.  For example, some individuals may begin to view cybersecurity as a mission to defend computer systems and networks for individuals and businesses alike.
