Introducing Me

Growing up, my life revolved around volleyball. Being the youngest in a family of volleyball players, I was forced to tryout for a volleyball team, which was the most pivotal point in my life. Because of this change, I met lifelong friends, got to travel all over the USA, and eventually was recruited to play Division 1 volleyball at ODU. Most importantly though, playing volleyball as a kid was how I found my lifelong passion. By the age of fifteen, I was mentoring younger girls from my volleyball club and helping to coach clinics at every chance that I had. Then, I picked up refereeing and further immersed myself in the world of volleyball.

Now, I am wrapping up my second year on the ODU volleyball team. I have enjoyed every thing about the experience, especially the friends I’ve met along the way. Being a student athlete, I have had the opportunity to grow close to many Spanish-speaking transfers, as well as Italian, French, and more. It is so cool to learn about different cultures and countries through my friends. I hope to continue exploring and being involved in foreign endeavors in my future. So, I am excited to see where Spanish will take me in a career one day.

Early in high school, volleyball and class was all I focused on. The only clubs that I was involved in were National Honor Society and Spanish National Honor Society. However, after attending leadership workout, I was encouraged to take on a leadership role and become very involved. I joined the student council, helped in pep-rally committees, partook in volunteer activities, and more. Because of these early opportunities to lead, I naturally expanded my ___ of volleyball to coach and mentor younger players.

Since high school and throughout my first two years in college, I have refereed and coached volleyball. I love coaching and the ability to mentor and lead kids, but refereeing is what I hope to pursue seriously after getting out of college. In the immediate future, for as long as I am able, I hope to referee professional and international volleyball. In this career, I plan on using my Spanish understanding and speaking skills to communicate with the international players. This is exciting as it gives me a way to combine my two passions in to a job that I’d enjoy. Although refereeing will be my primary concern, I hope to look for a career that I would be passionate about that will also put my degree in International Studies and Spanish to good use.
