Weekly Blog 10

Weekly Blog 10:

My initial course expectations included gaining a new perspective on how people behavior and what causes them to do so and I was thrilled when I began to understand the concepts presented in this course. Not only was I able to comprehend the material in the way I expected, I was able to apply the knowledge I have learned in my everyday life. It has made me hyper aware of the way I interpret people’s actions, and has also made me more critical of my own. One of my favorite aspects of this course was when I had to perform a good deed once a day for a week. Doing so has encouraged me to frequently incorporate this into my daily routine, and be more conscious of other people’s feelings. I was reluctant about taking this course during the summer and had initially planned to take it during the school year but found it to be a good decision after all. If i were to take this class again, I would try to check my grades more often so I could see the feedback given on certain assignments and incorporate that into assignments that followed.

I chose this image because it reflects the way I went about this course. Once I began applying more hard work and effort into my assignments I noticed an increase in the outcome. I dedicated more time into studying for the tests and noticed that I excelled in both of them so far.

Weekly Blog 9:

Heuristics was one of the first concepts I learned in this course which is also what my first assignment consisted of, as well as something I included as one of my top artifacts as well. The second top concept learned in this course was about prejudice and discrimination. I did an assignment on prejudice, as well as included it another one of my top artifacts. I used this as an opportunity to explore the way I view discrimination and the assignment challenged me to assess whether or not certain instances were inherently racist. I was also able to see a correlation between prejudice and the way heuristics may play a role, which became apparent to me when doing my top artifacts. Much of what I’ve learned is nearly interconnected and relate to each other, which made all the new material easier to digest. Another top thing I learned was related to the messages that commercials and advertising send to its viewers, which reminded me of an assignment I had to do for my Cross Cultural Psychology course. Both assignments consisted of finding advertisements that convey a certain message in society which shapes our perceptions surrounding gender and race.

Weekly Blog 8:

The ways in which men upset women, in my experience, include when a man leads me to believe they are genuinely interested, but are only putting on a facade or just to acquire sexual relations. A way that men anger me is if they cheat on me while in a committed relationship. Lastly, a way that men irritate me is when they are misogynistic or express hateful and harmful rhetoric toward women. In my experience, I’ve noticed that men get upset with women who bring past baggage into relationships. Men are seemingly irritated by women who have an attitude over little things. They also seem to be annoyed when women ask to see their phone or who they are texting. These are just observations that I have made, and may not accurately depict all men and women.

Weekly Blog 7:

Self-Regulation and emotional changes go hand in hand, because when you are aware of how you feel emotionally then it makes it easier to regulate those emotions. Emotional intelligence to me means when a person acknowledges how they feel emotionally and their capacity to assess other peoples emotions. I highly value emotional intelligence in my everyday life, and take pride in being about to gauge how people are feeling. This allows me to interact in a way that is more considerate in terms of my actions and word choices.

I took an online EQ test and these were my results. I answered the questions as honestly as possible, but I was surprised to see how low I scored on the self-awareness section.

Weekly Blog 6:

The video brought to light many things I didn’t consider in depth before. I have noticed prior to watching this video, the message that some ads try to send but typically in regards to race and women. I never considered the message it sent about men, but the video clearly  explained how men are typically depicted and how harmful those images are to society. Men are usually used in ads that stereotype them as brutal or violent, and deems masculine qualities as such. Similarly, feminine qualities are seen as negative and portray women as weak and passive.

(The images I chose for this assignment would not upload without an error, so I have included the links to the images instead)

  1. This image is harmful because it questions the intelligence of women. It insinuates that women aren’t intelligent enough to decipher whether or not that is a computer. – https://images.app.goo.gl/2cmeaLjt5a5u9GKJ9

2. This image shows a man with a hammer and an irritating look on face, which perpetuates the stereotype that men are violent. –https://images.app.goo.gl/6vapkfD1fPs1JdaVA

3. This ad sends a negative message that stereotypes women as only being good for cleaning and taking care of household duties. –https://images.app.goo.gl/r1NnE3oAwwxPA4hSA

4. This ad depicts the man as an abuser against the woman pictured, which pushes the narrative that men are “beast-like,” “violent,” and “brutal.” –https://images.app.goo.gl/1jtVCCGT3FBByMS4A

5. This ad is extremely detriment because it aims to destroy the innocence of children by objectifying and sexualizing them. – https://images.app.goo.gl/NGHABn4FNYzPripr8

Weekly Blog 5:

Picture A.

Picture A depicts a credible source because I frequently shop at target and they are typically a reliable store, therefore their advertisements are deemed credible to me. The factors that influence the perceived credibility is their trustworthiness.

Picture B:

Picture B represents an attractive source because I as a consumer can visualize myself purchasing the products. I found this source effective since they used a model I could relate to which is something I look for when viewing advertisements that utilize models.

Picture C:

Picture C demonstrates an advertisement source that is not credible, because this company utilizes images of women in wigs that don’t belong to them. They false advertise wigs on their websites by not using their own images.

Weekly Blog 4:

Upon reviewing my Test 1 results, I was pleased to find out that I answered all of the questions correctly. The exam one review was very helpful which can be demonstrated through the score I received. When studying the exam review, I referred back to my textbook for each chapter and focused primarily on the sections I wasn’t as comfortable with. I did this process about a week prior to the exam to avoid cramming all the information and not being able to retain it all. For future tests, I will continue to do what I did for the first exam.

I chose this image because these course objectives helped me understand the terms needed for the exam. In the textbook, I looked up these key terms to prepare for the material on the exam.

Weekly Blog 3:

I agree with the way in which the article described the connection between music and relationships, and how it can be an expression of a person’s core values which helps in relation to attraction. I remember distinctly when I first met my first love and best friend, we instantly clicked because of our scarily similar tastes in music. When we first discussed our favorite music, there were moments where we could even guess one anothers favorite songs by our favorite artists. We knew then that there was a divine connection between music and our attraction to one another, and music has been one of the major aspects of our bond. We both identified ourselves as audiophiles as well. Throughout our relationship we found many similarities in the way we both navigate through life, problem solve, and even connect with others. Our belief systems even correspond with one another very closely.

Weekly Blog 2:

The student I believe myself to be is one who puts in effort, but could always try a lot harder. I feel as though I struggle with procrastination despite still getting my work done. I want to learn how to manage my time better because that is a key component as to why I don’t reach my full potential. I think that if I applied more effort and put more time in, I would reach a level that would reflect higher in my grades. I would say my confidence as a student is a little above average. My self-efficacy results reflected somewhat of what I already knew about the student that I am, but surprised me in other areas. I ranked a 75 in the “Believe In Your Ability” section, an 80 in “Ability Can Grow with Effort” section, and a 76.9 overall. I notice that when I believe that I can accomplish a task, I’m more likely to exceed and do it as proficient as possible. However, if I don’t feel as confident, I will still accomplish it but at a more minimal effort.

This is a screenshot of my self-efficacy results. I chose this image because it displays the results I received from taking the survey.

Weekly Blog 1:

The course objectives for this class will aid me in my career tremendously because as someone who aspires to work with people, it’s pertinent that I gain diverse knowledge on how to work with people and have somewhat of an understanding of how they might think and how that may lead to their behavior. This understanding will allow me to make better decisions on how I approach people, the manner in which I speak to them, and interpret their actions. I expect to fully comprehend the material i’m receiving through this course and incorporate it into not only future profession but just in my everyday life of interacting with others as well as understanding my own role that I play in society. My hopes are that this course broadens the way I understand how people interact with one another. Some strategies that I intend on implementing to ensure my success in the course is dedicating an ample amount of time toward my assignments, and work toward avoiding procrastination. I am really looking forward to what the course will teach me, and know that whatever I gain will be applied in my everyday life.

I chose this image because it applies to one of the concepts from the second chapter regarding heuristics. This is an example of a representativeness heuristic. One may not initially realize that Martha Steward as someone who has also gone to prison, because in comparison to Snoop Dogg, people would be quicker to assume that he. This is due to the fact that he fits the narrative and stereotype where there is a correlation between black men and the prison system.
