Taking the time to not only go back to my first blog entry but, other entries as well I had to take a moment to reflect and be honest about what I actually accomplished and things I still need to work on as well. Not only as a student but also to be successful following graduation. I still have an issue with time management. However, other the course of the semester I did get a little better and there is always room for growth and progress. The class was insightful and I have already signed up for another class in the summer to continue to explore more in psychology. The scheduling at my current job and finishing school is still a struggle, but in the struggle, I know it will be worth it.

When I was a senior in high school there was a local family who would take in exchange students for the year. This particular year they had a student from Germany and also a student from Asia. Both girls were extremely shy at first, but as time progressed they opened up more. However, the student from Asia was extremely reserved and showed little facial expression when speaking and also was not accustomed to hugging, hand shaking, etc. The student from Germany loved to hug and used facial expressions regularly when speaking. Even after a year the students still held true to their way of communication. For myself, I’m very aware I use my facial expressions as well as my hands when I am communicating with someone else.

We have our classic fairytales such as Cinderella, Snow White, and Sleeping Beauty that have withstood the test of time holding true to the main message of the fairytales. However, through the years there have also been minor changes to these popular stories simply from either word of mouth or depends on who is writing the story. If written by Disney you will find that it will be happier and all is well in the end. However, if you were to read the Grimm brothers connotation you would find the ending being a bit more Grimm. One of the more popular fairy tales at the moment is Disney’s “Frozen”.  This particular film spoke volumes when it featured two sisters and their bond with one another instead of a princess in search of her prince. In late February 2018, the co-director of the film released a vague comment that she was open to the idea. When it comes to our culture and society as a whole we are becoming more tolerant of one another’s beliefs and values. Even just ten years ago it would be hard to imagine that a Disney Princess movie may being starting their first character to have a girlfriend. Through this it shows progression and that times are changing so we must change with it.

As my time as a distance learning student progresses I learn more about myself daily through the process of obtaining my degree. There is a certain routine I follow before I complete any homework or study activity. This routine serves as something that calms my nerves and opens my mind to the assignment I’m about to begin. I need to make sure I’m not hungry, that my space where I’ll complete my assignment is clean, and that I also have plenty of room to host my materials needed for the assignment. I had no idea how this regimen of mine would be so crucial to my learning until this past weekend.  On Thursday, we lost power and haven’t regained power since and it now Sunday. Usually if power is out we can easily rely on family for warm showers, electricity, and home-cooked meals. Unfortunately, no one around us has power and it has certainly put a wrench in how I feel I can effectively complete my assignments. After reading the following attachment, I do believe my behaviors fall into the self-determination theory.

  1. I am… Goal Oriented.
  2. I am… Hard Working.
  3. I am… Creative.
  4. I am… A caregiver.
  5. I am… Innovative.
  6. I am… Nurturing.
  7. I am… Sensitive.
  8. I am… Competitive.
  9. I am… Selfless
  10. I am… Realistic.

Independent construal of self-statements is associated with myself being competitive, realistic, hard-working, goal-oriented.While interdependent construal of self is associated with being creative, a caregiver, being innovative, nurturing, sensitive, and selfless. The English proverbs tend to generate more abstract traits than the Asian proverbs. One of the proverbs that come to mind is “Do as I say, Not as I do”. This particular proverb would fall more in the interdependent category. Also, another common proverb is “If you can’t beat them, join them”.  This also falls under the interdependent category. For myself I found it to be easier to classify my independent self-versus interdependent self. Based on the results I am more interdependent than independent. Without writing out the statements I would consider myself to be more dependent.

After taking the first test of the semester I felt pleased with my grade, but not satisfied. I feel like the question I got wrong were questions I would’ve gotten right if I would’ve slowed down a little more and read and re-read the question. I took the test one night after I had a long day at work and I have pre-planned a day off for my next exam so that I am rested and have plenty of time to complete it. The study guide was such a useful tool that was utilized over the week and I eventually made flash cards from it to review the material. For myself, I have found that rewriting what was incorrect over and over has helped me remember and retain the information better. I went back and referred to the text as well. I will continue to use this method as the course progresses in hopes for great success.

Values that I find important to myself are spending time with family and building new relationships and building on current relationships. I see relationships as something that should be cultivated and they take time. My parents never had the opportunity to attend college so I felt as if I owed it to them as well as myself to attend college so that I can provide for myself and future family. They have worked so hard to put back money so that I can attend college and have more than what they had. I also see it as a way of providing for them in the future.

My expectations for this course are set extremely high. I have yet to have a professor so detailed in her syllabus and her plans are so clearly mapped. Also, every assignment has a specific mapped out process into how it should be completed. I wanted to continue to grow more information about other cultures and broaden my horizons and later apply this material after I have graduated from Old Dominion University and I know this class will help me achieve this. I have set my planner up so that each course I am currently enrolled has a specific color. One problem I do have is that I work full-time in retail and I never know my schedule week to week and it does tend to make things difficult when planning which days for which course. The planner has been my main focus for success for the class.
