Interpretive, Interpersonal, and Presentational Modes of Communication
Exploring Culture
The lessons about food helped my understanding of how Spanish speaking people would interact with each other.
This assisted my understanding by informing me what Spanish people liked to eat. Along with how they order food and where they like to go. Prior to this i believed throughout the Spanish speaking world most foods were the same. Now I know even if they’re similar it ill be prepared different.
Engaging in Communities
In my immediate community I will wave and say “Hi” to people I know. At my work I’ll say hello to coworkers even if I don’t know them.
Due to COVID-19 I don’t leave my house much anymore. My interactions is mostly between friends when playing online games, family, and works. When interacting with my friends were loud and usually a little chaotic, with family and colleagues I’m more subdued quieter and more introverted.
Interpersonal Communication
The 2020-2021 saw me use TalkAbroad to communicate with people across the world. The program connects learners to native speakers in predominantly Spanish speaking countries.
The TalkAbroad program allowed me to speak with a man in Caracas and a woman in another country. For both of the conversations I was extremely nervous this was because I do not do well speaking to new people. In my final interview with Professor Gordus, while i feel i needed more practice i feel overall because i know him from class i was less nervous. So overall i feel i need to work on being less nervous.
Presentational Speaking
I do not believe there was an in-class presentation in the 2020-2021 year.
judging by how my other classes went along with my TalkAbroads I believe it fair to say i would have been nervous. This could have been made better by talking it over with a roommate or a parent.
Presentational Writing
In class we wrote two papers. These papers were on our daily routine in an interesting place and a hotel brochure.
In the first paper I believe I did quite poorly. The second paper I believe was much better. It was more enjoyable to write and I believe because of that I was more interested in learning new words.
Interpretive Listening
Throughout the semester our homeworks were a variety of types. Sometimes we would listen to a group discussing daily lives in Spanish.
The homeworks were good at showing how this group of people interacted as well as showing how people in different cultures interact. We learned about food and familial interactions.
Interpretive Reading
Throughout the semester we read from our text book for lessons and breakout rooms.
These reading would take the form of interview questions that we would interview each other with. This would commonly result in us looking up new words and learning how each other pronounces words. Professor Gordus would then verify if we were correct once we had returned to the whole class.
