Reflection: My academic journey this year

Dear Instructor, Bradley

To reflect on the past semester and year I’ve seen where I’ve improved since high school and even fall semester. I am glad to see how much progress I’ve made in my writing and academic journey. In fall semester I struggled with staying accountable for going to class and staying motivated. Also, my ability to produce good writing and maintain good grades the way that I did in high school. On top of balancing my work and responsibilities at the hospital was a true struggle. Not getting much sleep cause of late-night shifts then driving back to Norfolk then finishing up assignments it really was a burden at one point. Although, I remained confident, driven, and maintained my goals on becoming the nurse practitioner I strived to be. I’ve seen great growth academically and mentally but also my proficiency on how to produce good work in English the hardest subject for me. Which this e-portfolio will break down and represent my proficiency throughout the semester. This course has taught me that writing is a journey not everyone has to have the default writing style. You’ve taught us to loosen up and express ourselves to the best of our abilities. One of the most meaningful things you’ve taught me is less is more, to go back and revise my writing, that revision should be the point where you spend the most time at. Not to just fix grammatical errors or make sure everything is in its proper spot but to make sure you have a flow it isn’t choppy, and it doesn’t take away from your argument. The peer feedback for the Ignite talk was also a great confidence booster and that you gave my fellow students to apply their personal knowledge to help me grow. The writing assignment that was meaningful to me was the literacy sponsor reflection, it helped me realize all other the instructors and environments that have helped me grow into the person that I am today. Though, It was mainly you Instructor Bradley that helped me get out of my shell and be more relaxed when writing, you were understanding and compassionate which made you one of a kind compared to others in my academic journey. My biggest academic hurdle was my anxiety and confidence towards the work that I produced. I would overly critique myself I felt as if I always produced bad works. But by spring semester my confidence increased I felt proficient in what I was learning, I applied my skills properly and received good grades in return. Your feedback helped me properly use visuals to intensify my arguments, you reassured me that putting less won’t hurt me but help my arguments come out clear and gave me feedback on what I did good and what I could improve. I’m proud of my last piece I’ve made in this class cause as the semester moved on, I saw ups and downs in my grades but then as my last writing grade was put in, I realized I hit the pedestal I was aiming for a I received a one hundred percent. Which showed that you’re a great instructor, but you brought out the best in me and therefore saw proficiency until the end. This e-portfolio is the analysis of my progress as a student but also as an individual. It shows my growth in college but also the growth from younger ages to now. I am now grateful on where I stand in English and your contribution to bringing my academic confidence back.

Thank you, Sincerely Jasmine Smith
