Sport Journal Reflections

My experience in Dr. O’Hallarn’s Sport Communication Online class has been both eye-opening and rewarding. Coming into the course, I was eager to apply my background in mass communication and broadcasting, which I studied during my undergraduate years. I wanted to see how the skills I already learned could be incorporated into the world of sports communication. What I didn’t expect was how much this class would challenge me to be more creative and confident in sharing my ideas.

One of the most fulfilling parts of the course was creating my personal website through WordPress. The project allowed me to build a digital portfolio that showcases my work and creativity. I now have a space that reflects my academic and professional interests. Moving forward, I now have a space that reflects my academic and professional interests, which I can continue to build as I move forward in my career.

Another assignment that stood out was the opportunity to connect with a pen pal who currently works in the field I hope to enter. This experience pushed me out of my comfort zone and helped me form a meaningful professional relationship. The advice and insight I received through our conversations were incredibly valuable, and I’m grateful for the chance to start building and networking.

This class also let me tap into my personal passion for wrestling. While many people view wrestling primarily as entertainment, I appreciated the opportunity to cover the 1999 Survivor Series for my game report. It was exciting to analyze the event from a sports communication perspective and compare the production style to today’s more polished cinematic presentations.

Working on the group project was another important learning experience. I’ll admit that I sent quite a few emails regarding our progress, but being part of the team helped me grow as a leader. I had previously taken the DISC Assessment in Dr. Ridinger’s Sport Leadership course and scored high in the “D” (Dominance) category, which reflects a strong leadership tendency. This project allowed me to practice those skills in a real-world academic setting, and although there were minor challenges, the outcome and your feedback made the effort worthwhile.

Overall, this course has pushed me beyond my limitations and allowed me to discover new strengths. I am grateful for the knowledge and tools I’ve gained, and I plan to continue using them, especially the WordPress site, as I pursue my career.
