Network Engineering teaches how a network is put together and includes how to manage the system. While software is included it is not the main focus, but rather on the devices and functions themselves. It gives a background of how the network is put together which gives the knowledge on how to fix and upgrade at any time. Cybersecurity incidents happen over networks and therefore this background will help us understand how the networks are put together giving a one-up on how to best prevent the attack.
Computer Science is a major offered by ODU that will give one the basics of computing learning the language, math, systems, etc. This degree gives the base of cybersecurity and the best way to gain a foundation for entering into the cybersecurity field. Not only does it teach theory and ethics, but it also teaches the technical skills needed.
Database Administration gives one background into how information is stored. Cybersecurity relates to this as backups are stored on hard drives and are a target for people to steal or hack. The degree offered with give one the skill to not only understand how this process works but also how to manage and maintain it all while keeping everything secure.
Systems Engineering provides some of the same information as Network Engineering but on a different platform in a sense. Not only will you learn the basics of a system on how it works and is put together but you will also learn how to collect, analyze, and preserve the data on the system. Collecting and recovering data from a corrupted system or broken device can be key as it can make sure no information is lost, can help understand how to find what the hacker is looking for on the system, and learn where there are vulnerabilities.
