Personally, this reminds me of the Edward Snowden debate that happened just a few years later. The debate came from the people approving that they had the right to know what was going on with their privacy and others going in the other direction and calling him a traitor. I do not support this as we do not have all the facts. We never know why this secret stuff is going on and maybe there is a good reason. We do not have all of the facts to make a decision are just assume we are entitled to know everything. Parents keep things from their kids sometimes for the best and this could be the same situation.
I believe he is both as he did a criminal act no matter the good reasoning or intention behind it. It was criminal I believe his intentions may have been heroic if for the right reasons and not money, but that does not hold in court.
