Then use what you’ve learned to:

1. Identify in your initial post a point(s) or general assertion(s) by former FBI Director Comey that surprised you, challenged you or led you to agree or disagree with him, and explain why. In so doing use this podcast as a platform to address the legal, policy, and technical challenges posed by encryption. In your posts you may also consider what the rest of the world is doing in responding to the challenges of encryption.

Hearing the director say that no one is above the law and nothing should be exempted from the law was a comment I expected to hear. However, hearing that he understood why members were hesitant of the government and stated that they should be earned a level of respect in my opinion. Going into this podcast and knowing an FBI director was involved I went in immediately under the impression it would be a bunch of political answers and did not believe in any truth to any of it. He believes that the government use and equipment should not face cutbacks which was expected, but also hearing that instead keeping security and liberty equal. Using that technology scares citizens and makes us believe they are going to use it at free will due to the mistrust and he understood that. He stated that instead of cutting back one or the other we should work on both as there does not need to be any sacrifices.

I do believe the challenge of using encryption from the law point of view is that the information is needed and a warrant is obtained to get it. However, the director was correct in the fact people are too afraid to give that information such as companies. He proposed finding a way to protect the PII of the people involved while still getting what was needed. My understanding is that the US is not the only one facing these issues and Europe has been through the same struggles of finding that balance.
