I believe some may not report is that they do not know how to go about reporting. Before exploring the world of cybersecurity I used to think “Well what would the police even do?” and I believe others will think the same. I think some may believe nothing can be done and if it is a scam they may try to get their money back through the bank and report it if they must do so, but I do not think it will be because they think it will help.

Some may also be under the impression that it is not a serious enough event to report. If a car is stolen or in the cyber world banking information many will respond and believe it is serious and take the proper actions. For items seen as small such as a phishing scam, many will not report it because it seems futile. However, that is not the case as even reporting a fake website or email that is impersonating a company can help others avoid the scam or help the company become aware of the issue.

I believe there may not be enough information spread regarding what a crime is and how others can report it. Not all crimes in cyberspace result in going to the police, but that does not mean nothing should be done. Reporting a false website or email to the company being impersonated can let the company know and can even send an item whether a letter or email explaining the scam preventing others from becoming victims. If a person witnesses a crime in public some will stay behind to give a witness statement to the police to help the person affected and that should be no different than what occurs online. It can become difficult to defend what is not known.
