Reflecting on My Growth in Sport Communication

Sport Journal Entry: Reflecting on My Growth in Sport Communication

Over the past three months in Sport Communication, I’ve gained a much deeper understanding of how fast-paced and influential this field really is. Coming into the course, I knew sport communication involved media, fans, and teams, but I didn’t fully realize how many different areas it touches—from digital media and branding to crisis communication and athlete representation. This class has helped me see how everything connects, and it has made me more confident about pursuing a career in the sport industry.

One of the most valuable aspects of this course was learning how important relationships and networking are in sport communication. The Sport Professional Penpal assignment especially stood out to me. Being able to connect with someone actually working in the field gave me real insight into what day-to-day responsibilities look like and what skills are truly needed to succeed. It also showed me that building connections can open doors and create opportunities that you can’t get from a textbook alone.

Another important takeaway for me was understanding how organizations communicate with their audiences, especially during important or challenging situations. The assignments focused on media strategies and communication planning helped me realize how much thought goes into messaging. Whether it’s promoting an event, handling a crisis, or managing social media, every message has a purpose and can impact how a team or organization is perceived. This is something I know will be important in my future career, especially if I go into sports media or work with athletes.

Social media and digital communication were also major topics that I found extremely useful. In today’s world, fans are constantly connected, and teams have to keep up by providing engaging content across multiple platforms. Learning how to create and manage content, as well as understanding audience engagement, is something I know I’ll use in the future. This is especially relevant to me because I’m interested in being part of a sports media team or possibly becoming a sports agent, where branding and public image are critical.

The course also helped me think more about my personal role in sport communication moving forward. As a student-athlete, I already represent a team and a university, which means I am part of sport communication whether I realize it or not. This class has made me more aware of how I present myself, both in person and online. In the future, I want to use what I’ve learned to build a strong personal brand, communicate effectively with others, and take advantage of opportunities in the sport industry.

Overall, this class has given me both practical skills and a better understanding of the sport communication field. From networking and media strategy to social media and personal branding, I feel more prepared to pursue my goals. The sport industry is always evolving, and communication plays a huge role in that evolution. I’m excited to continue learning and applying these skills as I work toward my future career.
