Workplace deviance can be described as someone going against the policies or standards within a work environment. Examples of how this can occur usually stem from someone within a company. One instance could be that an employee was terminated, and to take out their anger on the company they may retain access by downloading content or by still having access to information within a database. They could then exploit that information and send it to competitors for any reason including financial gain. Another opportunity where workplace deviance can arise is due to most of the information within companies being held in technology itself. It is much easier for deviance to occur when employees are given access to certain parts of databases, but they could also find ways to get into places where access may be more protected. It’s much harder to catch workplace deviance when it happens through computers rather than someone actually committing deviance without using technology. For instance, these types of people can be caught on security cameras. However, those that work within the cybersecurity industry would take more time to pinpoint since they work behind a computer.
