Journal Entry #4

Maslow’s Hierarchy of Needs is a psychological theory that describes the various levels of human needs and how they motivate behavior. The levels of need, in order from the most basic to the most complex, are physiological, safety, love and belonging, esteem, and self-actualization.

In terms of my experiences with technology, I can see how each level of need is related to my use of digital devices and the internet. For example, at the physiological level, I use technology to meet my basic needs for food, water, and shelter. For instance, I use my phone to order groceries online, to check the weather forecast, and to find directions to the nearest shelter.

At the safety level, I use technology to protect myself and my loved ones. For example, I use my phone to set alarms and reminders to take my medication, to keep track of my appointments, and to stay connected with my friends and family. I also use security software on my computer to protect against viruses and other online threats.

At the love and belonging level, I use technology to maintain and strengthen my relationships with others. For example, I use social media to stay in touch with friends and family, to share updates and photos, and to join online communities with similar interests. I also use video conferencing tools to have face-to-face conversations with loved ones who live far away.

At the esteem level, I use technology to enhance my self-esteem and confidence. For example, I use my phone to take and share photos and videos of myself, to document my accomplishments and achievements, and to share my opinions and thoughts with others. I also use online learning platforms to gain new skills and knowledge, which can boost my confidence and self-esteem.

At the self-actualization level, I use technology to fulfill my potential and to pursue my passions and interests. For example, I use my computer to create art, to write stories, and to explore new hobbies and interests. I also use online resources to learn about new ideas and concepts, and to challenge myself to grow and improve.

Altogether, I feel that each level of Maslow’s Hierarchy of Needs—from satisfying my most basic physiological needs to realizing my potential and following my passions—is directly related to how I have experienced technology.
