Parallel Major

My parallel major in case I decide to not major in nursing is therapeutic recreation. Therapeutic recreation is a systematic approach to those who are disabled in order to address their physical needs through activity-based interventions. The purpose of this major is to help the disabled who physically incapable to maintain good physical and mental health through recreational activities. I found out this major through a camp counselor at the Outdoor Adventure Program on campus, and I loved the idea of helping the disable become more acclimated to physical movements through a more fun approach opposed physical therapy. Therapeutic recreation has shown tremendous growth and development over the past two decades, becoming a professional standard that exemplifies each professional’s dedication to quality standards and excellence in practice. In addition to my core classes, I would have to take Introduction to Therapeutic Recreation, Intervention Techniques in Therapeutic Recreation, and Disability Culture in Therapeutic Recreation. Job opportunities may vary due to what I would want to focus on in my major, but more professional experiences that I can expose myself to can include teaching disabled students at local high schools and physical therapy for disabled veterans. With therapeutic recreation, I can work as a recreational therapist, engaging patients in fun activities while still working on their physical health. If I decide to switch majors, my advisor would be Joe Hassell.
