Nursing
I am a freshman majoring in nursing at Old Dominion University. Growing up, I was once told by my mother that “too often we underestimate the power of a touch, a kind word, or a small act of caring”. After carrying this mentality throughout my life, I became interested in focusing my effort into the medical field. My passion for nursing first developed when my grandmother was critically hospitalized. After being exposed to the hospital staff and the work of a nurse, I became even more intrigued with how they truly are the backbone of the healthcare system. Apart from graduating from the Medical and Health Specialties program at my high school, I have volunteered at numerous hospitals, including the Children’s Hospital of the King’s Daughters and Sentara Leigh Hospital in Virginia Beach. I have also had the opportunity to shadow many health professionals in several hospital settings, including in Ear, Nose, and Throat Department and the Operating Room. After shadowing in these settings, I have grown an interest in either anesthesia or pediatrics. As a nurse, I hope to give my patients physical, as well as mental, wellness. I also hope to uphold my duties of a nurse by enhancing patients’ hospital experience.
