1. Transition to college
a. I can already tell that my first semester of college is going to be a blast. I am most excited to meet new people from various walks of life. I feel like because of the pandemic I have been walled up at home without the ability to connect with other people. Finally being able to interact with others is going to be great.
b. I am predicting my biggest challenge this semester is going to be learning how to balance a college level workload. While I was given course work in high school to prepare me for college, I still feel like I am not entirely ready. A big portion of my worry is probably just insecurity. Still, with the little bit of work I have been assigned, I already feel the slightest bit overwhelmed.
C. During my first semester of college I won’t have any official obligations outside of my education. I do plan on working seasonally at AMC Theaters, but I will only be doing so during break periods. Aside from that, I do plan to actively peruse my social life. I will most likely spend at least two hours a week participating in some form of social activity. When it comes to my job, I will spend twenty or more hours a week during break periods.
d. Unfortunately, during high school I was only able to participate in one student organization. The organization was called Teen Volunteer Corp. The program was facilitated by the Greenwood Public Library and its focus was on how to enrich our community as well as learning about various library processes. Some of the tasks we completed during the program included shelving books, cleaning, and orchestrating library programs.
e. As of right now, I would love to join the ODU Dance Association. From what I understand, the club is open to everyone regardless their experience level. From the program, I expect to experience an environment that fosters artistic language through physical expression. I might also join a health-related club. However, I still have more research to do when it comes to such organizations on campus.
2. Major/Career
a. My intended major is nursing. I chose this major because I truly admire other people’s ability to wholeheartedly care for another person’s well-being. While there are many ways to fulfill this calling, I find myself particularly drawn to the medical field. By taking care of others through nursing, I will get to care for people’s well-being and satisfy my medical curiosity.
b. I believe nursing is a suitable career choice for me because the field will allow me to use my strong desire to care for other people. My number one goal in life is to make sure others feel like someone will look out for their well-being, even if it is in a medical sense. I also believe that I have the intellectual drive to push through the education required to become a certified nurse.
c. I do not have any direct experiences related to the nursing field, but I do admire the way our nation’s nurses have stepped up to fight for the lives of their patients during the covid-19 pandemic. Even though a multitude of individuals have put themselves at risk during the pandemic, I believe that nurses served an especially important role.
d. In five years, my default plan is to be a pediatric nurse, but my true goal is to be an occupational nurse for a certain government organization. Due to the nature of the job, I can’t go into specific detail. I can say however, the job is extremely competitive. Once I work in that field for a while, I will most likely go back to practice in pediatrics.
3. Study habits
a. I would say the biggest difference between high school and college will be how I manage my time. In high school, there was plenty of wiggle room when it came to each hour of the day. Now that I am in college, I am beginning to see that every moment is time that could be spent on an assignment or studying. As a result, I cannot afford to waste any time.
b. In my opinion, there is a difference between homework and studying. Even though homework and studying are different, they both help reinforce the information that you learn in class. Still, homework alone is almost never enough to allow for anyone to get a full grasp on material. Additional hours spent outside of class are needed to fully reinforce the information learned in class.
c. This semester, I have a total of six courses. I will spend nine hours per class studying Chemistry, English composition, and Interpreting the American Past weekly. For Sociology, six hours will be spent reviewing information each week. For Chemistry lab and Intro to Health Professions, I will spend three hours studying per class weekly. For every hour spent in class, three hours of studying must be completed for each course.
d. I plan to study mainly in my dorm and the Perry library. I anticipate my phone being a distraction. Being able to make friends will be great, but I feel like I will want to engage with them through text when I should be focused on my studies. In order to minimize this, I will most likely make sure that my phone is either shut off or on silent.
e. Personally, I find the morning most agreeable for my study time. I generally have the most energy when I first wake up. Not only that, but I also feel a lot more focused. Later in the day, my mind tends to wonder. While I can certainly push through mind wondering, it is not my preference. Regardless, learning how to study in undesired circumstances is a very important skill to learn.
f. I don’t believe that one specific study method works best for me. Instead, I like to use a variety of methods. When I use the same method repeatedly, I usually loose interest in my studies. Boredom makes me a lot less motivated to study. Keeping it fresh by using various methods, keeps my mind stimulated. For example, I might use a mind map for one class and a set of flashcards for another. Aside from staying entertained, some courses may require more memorization, while others might need me to do many practice problems to get a grasp on the subject.
