Comparing the state of cybersecurity between the United States and North Korea
The United States while not perfect has a much more open and free internet than a lot of other parts of the world. Places like China, Russia, Brazil, and many third world countries with government corruption have much more heavily regulated internet. This is both a good and a bad thing when it comes to the cybersecurity aspects. It can be good because all packets that pass through is heavily regulated, monitored, and sometimes blocked. However, it can be bad as well for one organization monitoring the internet usage of an entire country would mean it has to have the capabilities to secure it otherwise it could prove to be a potential risk.
The United States requires a lot of cybersecurity presence due to the constant threat of malware and hacking being directed and aimed at it’s numerous networks and users within the country. The United States is a large country and considered by many to be a world power which means there will be a large technology presence like every other world power.
In a country like North Korea, the internet is extremely regulated even to those who have access. The majority of North Korea does not have access to the internet and those who do have access are only able to connect to North Korean government websites. The need for cyber security is very low as little to no one is using the internet or attached to the internet of things in any way.
The people who do have access to the internet are only high ranking government officials, and there are also some computers that some people have access to that are heavily monitored. Even then, these computers only connect to the North Korean internet which is considered to be a closed loop network.
The heavy censorship in North Korea is a very sad fact of life. However, this in turn means that the need for cybersecurity is extremely low.
