SPAN 101

Interpretive, Interpersonal, and Presentational Modes of Communication

Exploring Culture

I think through the VHL home work and the textbook i have learned many different culture perspectives. It taught me how things are different and how they are different in a cool way.

Some things that changed my perspective was their different holidays. They celebrate days like the day of the dead. Instead of it being sad they throw a big parade and dress up and have lots of food. It is kind of like Halloween but cooler. These things changed my perspective because I didn’t know there was different holidays. I didn’t know they celebrated different things as us. One day i would like to visit and participate in the day of the dead.

Engaging in Communities

In English, give a brief description of the value of, and importance of, engaging in your immediate community and the global community.

Engaging in your local community is a big thing. Showing your community that you are there to help and want to support is a big thing. You will never know when you will need help in return. You also get to know and meet new people that you would never get the chance to do so.

My experience in helping the community would be giving food and clothing the the homeless. In high school I would go to nearby areas and hand out food and clothing to the homeless with my freshman football coach. It helped me realize never take anything for granted. Anything bad can happen to a good person. Sometimes people are just put into bad situations and need a little help.

Interpersonal Communication

I have learned a lot through these type of activities. There are a lot of audio activities on the VHL website. Also there was alot of reading and follow up question in class on lectura quizzes.

Some things that were challenging on the VHL website were the audio ones. sometimes they were hard to understand and you had to compare them to the questions. There was a lot of answers you could select from so you could not guess. Over time I began how to correspond with the activities. You had to listen over and over again so you could get the questions correct. I learned you can not shortcut your way through these activities if you really wanted to master and understand them.

Presentational Speaking

Some presentational speaking activities i have done in class are when we break into groups and talk to each other about different topics. Another example would our interview with a fellow classmate or an interview with our teacher.

Some things I have been challenged in are definitely the interviews. I have never been great at Spanish but I have learned the more time you put in the better you are. Your study habits play a big part in your success to learn this language. I had to create and read over at least a couple hundred index cards of phrases for memorization. Things I would change are maybe my study habits early in the year compared to now I have exceled in teaching myself.

Presentational Writing

Some of my writing in Spanish came from compositions. Other things like discussion boards and quizzes/tests.

Some of the things i really struggled at was to write a full sentence of spanish. It became easier over time because you had to put in the work to underdstand how to create a full sentence. Through quizes and tests i gradually got better week by week. Discussion boards made you write about different topics that helped overall. The things i can get better at is expanding on the topic and not being so short with some sentences.

Interpretive Listening

Listening activities included quizes and working with classmates in class. Also intierviews took a big role.

Things that were challenging for me was the pace at what some people talk at. Some times it is hard to understand because it is just one thing after another and it goes so fast. But after awhile you get used to it and adapt. You start to catch on and understand what people are saying and begin to use their replies as yours. Youi really do get better as you go along. The only way to understand it is to keep at it and keep listening.

Interpretive Reading

The VHL website is a great example of what interpretive reading is. It had videos we had to comprehend and had to understand what the instructions were. Sometimes it would give us stories to read and questions to follow up with.

This website was very challenging at times. Things that helped was the unlimited takes for each problem. I had to overcome these problems with using the textbook it provides and studying hard. Things that I found interesting was that each assignment was different and had its own challenges all by itself. I get a lot from reading I take away new knowledge and also new worse and sentences. It really expands your vocabulary by reading.
