SPAN 102

I was able to explore Spanish culture through multiple different applications and studies in this class. This allowed me to gain an understanding not only of Spanish culture within my own community but abroad as well. These tools allow me to understand the similarities and differences that exist between the two cultures and areas. Things like universal healthcare, greetings and education were all part of the culture differences between the United states and areas like Spain and Argentina, Both which I interviewed in my talk abroad.

Engaging in Communities

The importance and value of engaging in communities outside of my own not only will allow me to expand my horizons it will also help my sphere of influence in my community. By being able to communicate with different cultures I can help express ideas, concerns, feedback or even just general conversation. Even if not on a negative level having the ability to communicate general themes will help everyone improve the community standards period

Interpersonal Communication

Throughout the semester I’ve collaborated through discussion boards, zoom in in with my professor, flip grids and talk abroad. All of which included a writing aspect and some even included the verbal aspect in which I had to speak. I did not have the opportunity to have an unplanned interpersonal communication activity. All of my activities were planned ahead in presentational speaking. Throughout interpersonal communication I excel at being able to identify key points and speech to pass along the idea or contract that was being stated.

Presentational speaking

The presentation will speaking inside this class was in flipgrid and in front of the professor. flipgrid focused on more of an objective based questions and answers to be stated in Spanish.

The three flipped group conversations included an introduction and two back and forth pre recorded videos from the professor to a live recording with myself period.  The module 9 flipgrid conversation including talking about eating, favorite activities and how to stay healthy.

Interpretive listening

Throughout the semester it was critical that we were able to interpret new verbs and even grammar inside of Spanish. Interpretive listening was used since day one and even up to the final. I use interpretive listening frequently as every homework assignment required T as interpretive listening break apart paragraphs and stories.

I’ve never had the opportunity to go into the language center since I’m a distance learning student but I have had the opportunity to observe conversation in my community. Whether that be at the stores or even at parades I used interpretive listening to eavesdrop and even understand confidently a majority of the conversation. Sometimes different dialects or even different Spanish based languages like Portuguese with throw a curveball for me. I found it interesting that a lot of Spanish dialects used Spanish based grammar and conversation.

Interpretive reading

Like interpretive listening interpretive reading requires the ability to pick apart conversations and known language. the midterm included a very long interpretive reading assignment in which I was tasked to understand what was being said and my own opinions with the article.

What was challenging for me is sometimes the vocabulary I was exposed to I either was unfamiliar with or I had no background with. I tried my hardest to use sentence structure and if I was unsuccessful with using sentence structure I would look at these senses before and after to get no idea of the theme. I found I was more strong with interpretive listening then interpretive reading as I could use hand gestures facial expressions and other physical items to show an idea.
