Maslow’s Hierarchy of Needs

This idea was initially presented in a 1943 paper titled “A Theory of Human Motivation” by Abraham Maslow, his theory was later refined in the book “Motivation and Personality”. These ideas still hold true today to some extent. At the base of the triangle is Psychological needs such as food, water warmth and rest, this relates to me because without joining the military I would always have to have relied on someone else to take care of these needs. On the next step up is Safety needs, in addition to physical safety and security, I now also have to protect myself digitally and try to create a smaller footprint digitally. after this step we come to Belongingness and love needs, this one is kind of iffy for me because I am a social outcast, I don’t have a lot of friends nor do I have anyone other than my children that love me. As we step up the pyramid we come to esteem needs, I have a hard time with this, but their is one instance where I felt accomplished. I used to run a training program for young sailors in a very technical field. I spent years wondering if I had wasted my time until one day I had a sailor approach me while I was headed to a meeting on base. He came up to me, wearing the same rank I was wearing when I taught him, and said you probably don’t remember me but you taught me everything I know on this subject and I used that to accelerate my career, thank you. That is one of the only times I have ever felt accomplished in life, I have since retired from the military, obtained an associates degree and have yet to feel accomplished. As for obtaining self actualization, I’m not there yet, I feel that I’m right at the precipice while I work on my Bachelors degree. I have a long road ahead of me that requires me learning a complete different trade than what I was taught during my military career. It is a challenge but I am up for it.
