Mistake of Law

In reviewing Andriy Slynchuk’s 11Things You Unknowingly Do on the Internet I have come to a few conclusions. One being that most of these are common sense if your under the age of 45. The second point being that some of these rules need to be revised, for example, streaming is not illegal, but downloading data be it movies games etc and then selling it to make a profit is. As for the top five rules, I have already discussed number one but to further the point streaming at home is not illegal or covered under copyright law. Torrenting files on the other hand only becomes illegal when the material downloaded is copyrighted. That being said streaming and torrenting are both dangerous because you are opening a connection to P2P software transfer. If your not running a VPN and properly configured firewall you are exposing your data to potential malicious hackers. Using copyrighted materials is a challenging one because unless you know how to find public domain images you are probably using copyrighted material. This includes photos that someone else takes with their phone and uploads to google. As astute as I am about not sharing passwords, addresses, or photos of other people, this is not common amongst the population of the world. This can be dangerous because you could unknowingly give access to malicious actors by sharing the photos and addresses of someone who has not given explicit permission. Bullying and trolling is one of the main reasons I got into cybersecurity and hacking. I had something happen at home that required me tracing an email from it’s origin Internet Protocol address. Essentially blame was placed on a family member for a bunch of insensitive emails. I ended up tracing them and found that it was another person spoofing this family members email. In the end to me these all seem to be common sense. Alas I am a student of cybersecurity and a private person so I was doing these quite a bit before even studying cybersecurity.
