Companies storing data has become such a common practice, that rarely do people look at it and realize how unethical it is and how much of a privacy concern it is. Companies storing your search history, phone number, and other such personal information can lead to various issues, mostly due to the potential of said company getting hacked and losing your personal information. On top of that, in the US, companies can freely sell your data to advertisers, which is even more unethical, but that’s what happens in today’s society. Another ethical issue with storing data, is the due to the terms and conditions for most companies, they can freely store and sell the personal information and data of children under the age of 18, causing advertising companies like JUUL to specifically advertise to an impressionable audience. While this is legal, it is incredibly unethical and has been a heated debate in recent conversations, hence why JUUL is being banned in many different places. Another ethical issue with storing personal data is the fact that many companies have been hacked and personal information stolen, but didn’t alert their customers until days, weeks, or even months after the hack, preventing those people from being able to secure their data and any information they might’ve lost.
