There are many majors offered at odu and of them, I was able to find 4 of many that pertain to Cybersecurity and they are: Sociology, Database administration, Computer Engineering, and Criminology. Sociology is essentially the study of how people behave in different social settings. This is a crucial point to understand with Cybersecurity because when we can understand how people behave in different situations, we can better understand how to secure our data and systems in those settings and situations. People tend to create patterns and habitual responses in situations they are in regularly and when we can observe and understand these patterns, then that helps to solidify defenses even more for all data and systems that need to be protected in an organization. Database administration definitely ties into cybersecurity because it pertains to equipment that is used and protected in the field of cybersecurity. Database Administration is a major dealing with taking care of and maintaining system equipment and software. This is important in relation to cybersecurity because not only must you ensure your data and systems aren’t being attacked by viruses and hackers, but you must also ensure that the system software and equipment is running properly and there are no glitches. If a system is not maintained properly, the system could shut down, or data could be destroyed or lost. Computer Engineering is a fairly obvious major that would fit right in with cybersecurity. Computer engineering is simply the development or engineering of computer hardware and software. If you know how to make the hardware and software for a computer or system, then you know how it operates and know exactly where some of the vulnerabilities are and can efficiently prevent any attacks or exploits on that system. Lastly, Criminology is the study of crime and bad behavior. Sociology even plays a part in criminology because you need to know how people behave in certain settings, know what type of crimes they could possibly commit, and why. In relation to cybersecurity, Criminology helps to observe and track patterns of cyber and non-cybercrime and threats to help stop, prevent, and possibly even catch the attacker responsible. There are plenty of other majors that pertain to Cybersecurity as well because there are so many factors that weigh into this field whether it be the user themselves and how they behave, the equipment and how it operates, or even the environmental factors of the area the organization or systems are located.
