Two of the countries with the highest rates of cybercrimes and attacks are China and the United States. The reason both countries are two of the highest in most categories of cybercrime and attacks is that the technological advancement in these countries is ever expanding along with the increase of population. As their populations grow, more and more people become reliant on technology which provides more opportunities for attacks and spamming attempts. The areas in which each country “excels” in attacks and threats do vary but overall, both China and the U.S rank in the top 5 countries worldwide with either attacks being received or sent (Kigerl, Cyber Crime Nation Typologies: K-Means Clustering of Countries Based on Cyber Crime Rates 2016).
The United States and China both are high in phishing attacks but the U.S is higher in advance fee frauds. These types of attacks tend to happen in countries that are more established and have a thriving economy. A thriving economy results in more individuals having a better financial situation per household and so attackers have more victims to choose from. Phishing attacks can happen throughout the world and more likely happen within the U.S and China due to the technology advancements being higher as well as access to technology is higher in these countries. The United States is more susceptible to more spamming attacks, advanced fee attacks and even attacks that lead to kidnapping and ransom due to having more personal information of their citizens available globally whereas China has strict rules where their citizens personal data has to be approved by the government before it can even leave the country. They also have the GFW (greatest fire wall) which restricts and prohibits many western websites which in turn limits a lot of traffic in and out of the country (Hedley & Mark Hedley For more information on China’s technology sector contact Mark Hedley, 2021). Even with all of the different restrictions that China has, they still fall victim to attacks. Both U.S and China remain at the top of most lists for the highest amounts of cyber threats whether they originated there or they are victims. With so much of their economies and major infrastructures heavily reliant on electronics and different types of technology, it has become difficult to maintain security at every major facility. Just recently, a Florida water plant was very easily hacked due to lack of security policies being implemented and enforced (Ropek, 2021). All the security in the world isn’t enough to secure any device or infrastructure if the staff is not maintaining the policies and procedures efficiently. These two countries, U.S. and China, along with several others that have joined in the technology race will continue to fall victim to more and more cyberthreats and attacks. The more electronics and technology advance, the more time and skills the attackers develop and then the more they will attempt all of their attacks and without proper security, attacks will continue to seep through.
