{"id":404,"date":"2026-03-16T18:59:37","date_gmt":"2026-03-16T18:59:37","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/sites.wp.odu.edu\/jdent008\/?page_id=404"},"modified":"2026-04-28T20:08:37","modified_gmt":"2026-04-28T20:08:37","slug":"projects","status":"publish","type":"page","link":"https:\/\/sites.wp.odu.edu\/jdent008\/projects\/","title":{"rendered":"Projects"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p><strong>Course<\/strong>&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Opportunities&nbsp;for&nbsp;hands-on&nbsp;experience, especially in an IT related field,&nbsp;are highly sought&nbsp;after,&nbsp;and&nbsp;I look to&nbsp;take advantage of each one that&nbsp;is&nbsp;presented to me.&nbsp;In&nbsp;the&nbsp;spring&nbsp;of the&nbsp;2025&nbsp;semester, I took&nbsp;an&nbsp;Intro to Network &amp; Security&nbsp;(CYSE-495) course.&nbsp;This course aimed&nbsp;to introduce modern networking concepts and technology&nbsp;by focusing on fundamental concepts, basic network architecture,&nbsp;and&nbsp;network designing and constructing.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Project<\/strong>&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>This specific hands-on opportunity&nbsp;was a course project that&nbsp;consisted of&nbsp;wiring&nbsp;an RJ-45 cable.&nbsp;This project intrigued me because I knew it involved&nbsp;relevant skill work and would translate to&nbsp;the&nbsp;real world outside of school.&nbsp;At the beginning of this project, students were given an&nbsp;ethernet cable&nbsp;and instructed to strip it to&nbsp;expose&nbsp;the wires housed within it.&nbsp;With those wires now visible, students untwisted them and&nbsp;ordering them correctly to feed into the RJ-45 connector. Once that was complete, students were able to test their cables for&nbsp;a good&nbsp;connection.&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Why&nbsp;<\/strong>&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>&nbsp; This course consisted of developing a number of floor plans for wiring buildings.&nbsp;So, this project was a great chance&nbsp;to get a more in-depth view of the cables themselves. It was also&nbsp;necessary&nbsp;so&nbsp;students&nbsp;could answer given questions at the conclusion of the project. For example:&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul>\n<li>Why is it critical to use the proper pin colors in order?&nbsp;<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<ul>\n<li>Why is it critical to make sure that&nbsp;all of&nbsp;the wires are pushed to the end of the connector?&nbsp;<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<ul>\n<li>Why is it recommended to double-check the wire order and make sure the wires are to the end before crimping?&nbsp;<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<ul>\n<li>How is a continuity tester different from a certification tester?&nbsp;<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Skills<\/strong>&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul>\n<li>Completed&nbsp;hands\u2011on&nbsp;lab assignments involving Ethernet cable construction.&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<ul>\n<li>Performed&nbsp;end\u2011to\u2011end&nbsp;cable termination, including stripping, crimping, and verifying RJ\u201145 connectors.&nbsp;<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<ul>\n<li>Reviewed and corrected&nbsp;physical\u2011layer&nbsp;connectivity issues in simulated network environments.&nbsp;<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<ul>\n<li>Applied structured cabling best practices in&nbsp;lab\u2011based&nbsp;network buildouts.&nbsp;<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Evidence<\/strong>&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"453\" height=\"423\" src=\"https:\/\/sites.wp.odu.edu\/jdent008\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/36790\/2026\/04\/image-5.png\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-449\" srcset=\"https:\/\/sites.wp.odu.edu\/jdent008\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/36790\/2026\/04\/image-5.png 453w, https:\/\/sites.wp.odu.edu\/jdent008\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/36790\/2026\/04\/image-5-300x280.png 300w, https:\/\/sites.wp.odu.edu\/jdent008\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/36790\/2026\/04\/image-5-321x300.png 321w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 453px) 100vw, 453px\" \/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>This is a picture of my personal experience&nbsp;attempting&nbsp;to wire an RJ-45 cable.
