Some examples of critical infrastructure systems include transportation networks, water treatment facilities, power plants, hospitals, and food and Agriculture. Disruption of these systems can have detrimental consequences. These systems are subjected to Cyber threats, human error, and natural disasters. “The list of cyber threats increases rapidly, as the number of hacking-sensitive platforms and potential victims increases, attracting more and more individual, private, and state actors into the fray” (Tal). Examples of cyber threats to which these systems are subjected include Phishing and spyware attacks, botnets, Denial of service attacks, and disgruntled employees. Human error threats include “Disgruntled insiders, poorly trained employees, incompetent contractors – all creating the opportunities for outsiders to penetrate networks” (Tal). Natural Disasters that can play a role in threatening critical infrastructure include “earthquakes, tsunamis, land shifting, volcanic eruptions, extreme weather (hurricanes, floods, drought), fires’ (Tal). Disruptions in these systems can result in severe problems and restrict access to critical resources.

SCADA’s Role in Mitigating these Risks
SCADA systems are crucial in reducing risks associated with critical infrastructure systems. These systems operate in real time, processing information and providing operator feedback. Through proper training and careful operator observation, SCADA systems should be continuously improved to enhance overall security and reliability. SCADA systems are often heavily secured, and only authorized users have access to these systems. This is also key to keeping these systems secure and operating continuously. SCADA systems can process information quickly, allowing operators to mitigate these issues quickly and prevent huge losses.

Conclusion
Ensuring critical infrastructure security is crucial for the well-being of society, governments, and the economy. Any failure or attack on these critical systems can result in severe damage. Therefore, it is imperative to take all necessary measures to protect critical infrastructure from potential threats. SCADA systems are absolutely essential for ensuring the security of critical infrastructure. We must relentlessly pursue innovation to improve their effectiveness and protect our infrastructure.
