I joined the Medical Reserve Corps in the city I live in so that I could help my community by responding to public health events or assisting in health-related activities. Since the beginning of the COVID-19 pandemic, volunteers with the MRC have been busy assisting with community testing and vaccination clinics. Even though I do not possess a medical license, I’ve been able to assist in many other ways such as helping community members register for testing and vaccination. My favorite organization to assist as an MRC volunteer is Healthy Chesapeake, a non-profit group that collaborates with my community’s health department to promote population health projects and initiatives. Examples include preparing hot meals at local shelters and handing out food boxes to families with school-age children during periods of virtual learning.
