Maslow’s Hierarchy of Needs is a psychological theory proposed by Abraham Maslow that describes human motivation and the fulfillment of specific needs. The hierarchy is typically depicted as a pyramid divided into five levels, with each level building upon the previous one. These levels are psychological needs, safety needs, love and belonging needs, esteem needs, and self-actualization needs. Let’s examine each level and how they relate to my digital experiences.
Physiological needs: This level encompasses fundamental biological needs such as food, water, air, shelter, and sleep. In the context of my digital experiences certain advancements have fulfilled these needs. For example, DoorDash and Uber Eats allow quick and convenient access to meals, while smart home systems enable control over temperature and lighting for a comfortable living environment.
Safety needs: Safety needs include personal security, health, employment, property, and overall stability. Technology has played a significant role in enhancing safety, particularly in areas such as home security systems, health monitoring devices, and access to emergency services. For instance, smart home systems such as Ring provide an additional layer of protection, and wearable devices can track our vital signs and notify emergency contacts in case of distress. Ring doorbell camera has been very helpful in keeping up who is coming to and from my house as well as me being able to see when packages are delivered.
Love and belonging needs: This level pertains to the need for social connection, intimacy, friendships, and a sense of belonging. Technology has revolutionized how we connect with others, especially in the age of social media and communication platforms. Through platforms like Facebook, Instagram, and Snapchat, I’ve been able to maintain relationships with people both near and far. Online communities on Twitter also provide opportunities to connect with like-minded individuals and find a sense of community.
Esteem needs: Esteem needs involve feelings of accomplishment, recognition, and self-worth. Technology has been instrumental in helping individuals build their self-esteem. Accessibility to online learning platforms and web resources allows for personal growth and skill development. Instagram and other social media platforms also provide recognition and validation through likes, comments, and virtual applause.
Self-actualization needs: This is the highest level of Maslow’s hierarchy and refers to the pursuit of personal growth, fulfillment of one’s potential, and meaningful contributions to society. Technology has opened up endless possibilities for self-actualization. Access to knowledge through the internet enables me and other individuals to pursue their passions and dreams. Digital platforms such as YouTube offer me opportunities for creative expression, entrepreneurship, and making a positive impact.
