Cyber Law
In this course students focused on gaining a broad knowledge of constitutional, civil, criminal, and related legal considerations that arise in the context of work or citizenship in an increasingly cyber/digital world. Whether the student seeks a career in the public or private sector, the student will gain insight into both the limits and authorities on government or private sector activities, from the creation and protection of intellectual property, to the investigation of unlawful cyber activities, to the considerations of cyber operations in an increasingly dangerous world. The first half of the course examined various legal concerns that broadly affect citizens and private entities, from basic cybersecurity, freedom of expression, internet regulations, information-gathering and access to information, privacy, to intellectual property and other topics. The second half of the course examined legal authorities of, and limits imposed on U.S. government organizations and personnel (e.g., domestic law enforcement agencies) involved in cyber investigations. This broadened awareness will help me to successfully navigate and strengthen personal and professional choices as I move ahead.
Course Material
Below are two course assignments that I have completed within the course that demonstrate my mastery over the topics I learned and descriptions of the assignments.
Assignment 1
In this assignment, I had the opportunity to explore critical issues surrounding data protection and privacy in the context of a hypothetical state, Mongo, under the governance of Governor Karras. The task involved drafting a memorandum to the governor, aiming to clarify the complexities of data privacy concerns and to propose potential legislative solutions. The importance of this assignment stems from the increasing relevance of data privacy in our digital age. As constituents become more aware of their rights regarding personal data, it becomes essential for policymakers to understand these issues comprehensively.
This assignment was significant not only in honing my analytical and research skills but also in preparing me to engage with real-world issues of law and policy that affect every individual’s privacy and rights. By translating complex legal concepts into clear, accessible language for a policymaker, I contributed to an essential dialogue about data privacy that is increasingly pertinent in today’s technological landscape.
Assignment 2
In this assignment, I had the critical task of conducting thorough research on cybersecurity legislation to aid U.S. House Representative Tito Canduit of Virginia’s 26th District in his efforts to communicate effectively with his constituents about cybersecurity threats and protections. The goal was to provide a comprehensive memo that he could use as a foundation for educating voters on the importance of cybersecurity laws and his commitment to addressing these issues during his reelection campaign. The significance of this assignment lies in the ongoing relevance of cybersecurity in our increasingly digital world. Cyber threats can impact individuals, businesses, and national security, and elected officials must engage with their constituents on these matters. This assignment not only helped me to deepen my understanding of cybersecurity issues but also equipped me with the skills necessary to communicate complex legal concepts in a relatable manner for constituents. In the memo I aimed to contribute to informed public discourse on cybersecurity and enhance the connection between elected officials and the communities they serve.
