I am interested in cybersecurity because it is an interdisciplinary education. Its education encompasses the technical approach of protecting computer systems through software and hardware aspects. I am also interested in its scope regarding the phycological aspects. Since the age we all live in has its security being upgraded on a consistent basis, malicious hackers tend to take advantage of the weakest link. We can do so much on the software and hardware end of the security spectrum. One of the most challenging aspects would be the psychological side. How can we help people understand the risks and circumstances of cybersecurity? What can we do to better educate the public about protecting their data? How can we inform them about the potential risk of falling into the sinkhole of scams and ransomwares? In its interdisciplinary approach, I will explain 4 majors offered in ODU and how they relate to cybersecurity. First is information science, Information science pertains to how information is stored and how it is protected. Information scientists deal with information security, organization, representation and effective retrieval. The second is Sociology. Sociology is the study of humanity’s social structure. This covers social behavior in relation to society and how it evolves. Sociology takes a good chunk of cybersecurity. It is in this area that molds cyberspace. It influences cyber offending in many ways that can be difficult to anticipate. Since most of our communication is now in cyberspace, it has never been more crucial to protect our systems in order to secure the communication mediums we have created. Business is one of the most important clienteles of cybersecurity. With varying business models created to the convenience of society, it is crucial that cybersecurity is flexible and versatile to what is needed in order to keep it stable and functioning. It is vital to the effectiveness of a society that businesses are protected because they tend to process a lot of important information about people. Criminology has never been more efficient than it is now. With the evolution of technology, the height of cyber criminality has gone up. It is no longer within the realm of physical crime when it comes to law enforcement. To better protect the people, cybersecurity must continue to evolve to combat malicious hackers and protect people’s data.
