Artifact Five

My favorite item I archived was the Self Across Situations assignment. For this assignment, we were suppose to list five traits that described our personality, and then, write a paragraph describing a situation we showcased the trait. However, for this assignment, I decide to list six traits instead. My traits consisted of being adventurous, ambitious, generous, humorous, persistent, and sensitive. However, I learned I don’t display all these traits. Instead, these are traits I hope to possess one day. My real traits consisted of being humorous, ambitious, and persistent. I can only hope one day I succeed in accomplishing the personality I wish to possess.

Artifact Four

I also enjoyed Module 12 Aggression Questionnaire. For this assignment, I had to circle the words I thought displayed aggression in a sentence, and then, indicate which words, I believed, displayed the most aggression. As a result, this assignment made me realize not all aggression is bad. For example, in sentence nineteen, the physician uses aggression to give a flu shoot to a screaming child. Thus, it was not the doctor’s intention to hurt the child, instead, the doctor was trying to help the child in the near future. As a result, I believe aggression can be used for good instead what its made out to be.

Artifact Three

Another one my favorites was from Module ten regarding violating social norms. For example, for this assignment, I was suppose to violate an implicit norm and, then, analyze the reactions of others. One norm I decided to violate was social etiquette. While eating out at restaurant, I decided to eat loudly by slurping on my drink and “smacking” while I ate. As a result, various people, including my family, looked at me in a questionable manner. My mother even stated, “You’re embarrassing me!” This goes to show how much people believe in proper etiquette when it comes to being in public. However, I do not believe people’s reaction would have been the same if I was in the comfort of my home.

Artifact Two

The next item I archive was from Module eight. For this assignment, I had to pick two adjectives that described various ethnic groups, and then, discuss whether I thought each group is stereotyped. Based on Katz & Braly (1933) and Gilbert (1951) and the adjectives I’ve chose, I believe stereotypes of certain ethnic groups have changed over time. For instance, based on Katz & Braly’s adjectives, the Chinese are characterized as sly and superstitious, however, I believe they’re very obedient and family oriented. This goes to show how times have change. Then again, I’ve learned it depends of each person’s interaction with someone of that ethnicity.

Artifact One

Lastly, my least favorite was Module four. Module four made me realize media tends to overemphasize drastic cases. For instance, when the shooting of the night club that took place in Orlando, Florida happen, the suspect was named a terrorist. This caused numerous people to behave hostile toward people of the same ethnicity of the shooter. Others protested about restricting the ban on immigrants. This caused unnecessary aggression throughout. However, I do understand why each individual is angry or scared, but we cannot discriminate against different race due to one person’s actions. We have to be fair and equal to all no matter the circumstances.
