This assignment was very critically challenging, as I was to find a peer-reviewed article about one the chapters and identify a topic that related to it. I selected chapter 4 and the topic was ethics of culture and how this relates to development of people in different cultures. I look at the three ethics of autonomy, community and divinity across two different cultures. These two cultures were the U.S in comparison to India. The article I used was called The Cultural Development of Three Fundamental Moral Ethics: Autonomy, Community, and Divinity and it revealed how there are strong similarities to how different cultures in various countries all have three ethics and use them in similar ways for moral reasoning. This assignment has helped me in being able to effectively conduct researched for peer-reviewed articles and navigating on what articles information is useful for applying to my topic. This is important because I have two more classes where I will be writing 5 plus page papers with bibliographies and the requirement of peer-reviewed articles. In addition to that, in my Gender Communication course I am learning about what makes different cultures unique to how they develop gender roles in a society. This is an important piece to note when it comes to the ideals of how people are socialized early on and then change from childhood to adulthood with gender roles based on there ethic reasoning within the realm of autonomy, community and divinity. I believe these all play a role together to influence how people move throughout life and there perception of what their gender roles should be.

This is a photo I took in one of my communication courses. I use this as a two-fold reference to explain how this was a construct put together after conducting research about communication of humans. Also I use this to explain that everything in development begins with communication of a culture. This is how people learn and how information is passed down from children to children. Communication never stops and whether its verbal or non-verbal internal or external, communication is the building blocks to a culture way of being. When placing this in context with my topic of ethic development, the underlining tone throughout chapter four and the research article was communication.

For this assignment I had to identify advertisements from the U.S and from another country that represented gender visual advertisements. I found 3 female U.S advertisements and 3 male U.S advertisements and talked about comparisons and contrast between them. I found some interesting points as wells as some points that have been widely discussed for decades now when it comes to the influence of gender geared advertisements. I discovered that for 2019 it somewhat challenging to find sexes ads like it was maybe three years ago. Though they do exist they are less often. I also found that female ads seem to still use sex and woman appearance to sell products more so than for male ads. After that I found a few ads from Europe and did an analysis of comparison and contrast from the U.S ads. It seemed as though Europe was even more less likely to use sex gendered ads and this makes since because they came out with a law two years back removing those type of ads because of the negative influence that it has. In my gender communication course this is the type of dialogue that has been going on in my class that same week so it was very useful assignment to make it more applicable to what I was learning and reinforce the knowledge.

This is a promotional Instagram advertisement from a group that I promote with for an event that just happened this weekend. I use it to show that marketers are utilizing various creative ways to attract customers to an event beyond just the typical gender ads.

For this assignment I had to choose a blogger who was from the U.S, but was living abroad in another country and writing about their experience. I had to identify what it was the writer was going into depth about and the purpose of them studying abroad. Then I had to identify if they were making drastic changes in there communication and feelings toward the country as they started from there first entry and went to there last in relation to two themes I choice.

This was the most interesting assignment so far, because I got to learn a lot about Barcelona through someone else’s shared experiences. My blogger of choice she was very descriptive and insightful on the culture of Spain and the community she lived in. Her ability to make comparisons and differences between American and Spanish culture in relation to urban environment and structural institutions really painted a vivid picture for me.

When reading her blogs it helped mw relate to what we have been learning in class about enculturation and socialization agents. The way she was able to go into discussion about the history of the Barcelonan culture from past to present and then mention some of the strong commonalities about the people such as genuine kindness helped me to better understand how the discussion of Cognitive Development in chapter 4 of the book Culture & Psychology and its takes on Kohlberg’s Theory of Morality is so applicable to societies (Juang & Matsumoto, 2017, p. 100).

I chose Neogi as the blogger because I want to travel and study abroad in Barcelona one day. This has helped me gain some indirect experience that I can use to navigate the journey myself one day. Also it gives me somewhat of an expectation of what the people and communities will be like and how I will be treated as a tourist. This assignment was also relevant because as I read the blogs certain terms that have been in the book in relation to culture and society development have been coming alive and making more since as I had the viewpoint of another society to look at.

This is a photo of me I Ecuador looking at the painting and statues on a beautiful campus that my friend attended for his degree in Dentistry. I was so amazed at how detailed and unique the different paintings and sculptures were and what they meant. I could honestly say that if my friend were not there as the guide to help me understand them not to mention the language then I would not have got that full experience looking at them by myself. In a metaphorical since he was essentially like my blogger, ‘writing as I was reading in real time.’

The assignments this past week consisted of writing a weekly blog about my results on Neo personality test I had taken and writing assignment about American values and which one I consider most important. I thought that both of these assignments were very interesting and put a lot of after in them after completing them.

For the American value assignment I thought it was mind blowing how 13 values could be assigned as collective core values for American people who are individualist and pride our selves on that type of independence. So naturally I would assume we all hold different values. After reading the article and going through the values I then realized that these values are some that characterize myself as well as others I know. I also begin to understand that because Americans are so individualist and a self-independent society these values are ones that characterize us as being such. From the 13 values listed the one I chose and identified with most was the value of “time and it control.” In one of my points I asserted was that we have an infatuation with time controlling things and us controlling time.

For the ePortfolio assignment I wrote a blog on my ODU wordpress site about what results then I get after taking the Neo personality test and what were my thought to the results. I actually identified what I felt my personality was on the Neo scale before answering the questions and then compared that two what I got after answering the questions. There were very little differences, which proved that I know myself.  The scaled measured five personality segments, which were neuroticism, extraversion, consciousness, openness and agreeableness. This assessment really was a good tool to help me learn myself better and maybe give some insight into others when viewing them from this personality telescope.

Both these assignments help connect dots to another class of mine called Gender Communication. In this class we discuss American stereotypes of genders associated in our society as well as values that come along with being male or female in our society. These ideals of conditioning to be a certain way based on the culture helps me to understand others and myself better. I feel it has relevance to myself because as a artist and writer I tell stories and paint pictures to convey meaning and send messages. As I use this to understand cultural norms, values, and societal trends in behavior and thought it will help me shape my message in a way that is normalized to the culture.

This image is to represent how all human brains are wired and structured the same and because of that the culture you are apart of can imprint it’s identity upon you in similar patterns making us inherently identical in how we believe, think, value information, traditions, values and norms.
