English 211C: English Composition

As a second semester course in my first year, English 211C was a required course for all students. This class required us to choose a semester topic that related to our major and my chosen topic was price gouging during natural disasters. I had to argue for the elimination or modification of price gouging laws through the use of sources, which were limited to scholarly journal articles. In order to understand the evidence provided by these sources, I had to understand basic consumer supply and demand. I also had to understand the economic evidence that opposed my point of view. For example, one source provided evidence that lower prices were better for the economy during disaster situations as it helps to increase consumption. My understanding of both sides of the argument allowed me the opportunity to either refute or acknowledge their claim with my understanding of supply and demand. The assignments also forced me to develop good work habits. While this may seem like a minor development, good work habits as well as knowing personal limits will help with studying for future courses. It can also help with my future career in accounting as knowing when to walk away and take a break is important to improving productivity as well as reduce stress. The work in this class also helped me to develop skills for writing in my future courses. As I am only in my first year of courses, I do not doubt that I will have many more writing assignments in my future classes.
