Final Reflection

Your First Semester

  • Tell us how you have grown from the beginning of the semester to now.

Throughout the semester I have grown very much in both my personal and academic life. I have learned a lot about myself since I have gained more responsibility and freedom. I think I have become more responsible throughout the semester because of my freedom. I have also learned a lot about myself as a person, for example, the best study habits for me and managing my time better.

  • What were your expectations for this year? Did this semester’s experiences meet your expectations? Explain.

This semester I expected to breeze through most of my classes and make a few friends along the way. This semester did not meet my expectations about my classes because they were more difficult than I thought, but not too bad. I am happy with the way my classes turned out. The semester did meet my expectations about making a few friends. I was able to make many acquaintances and a few closer friends over the semester.

  • What is something you wish you knew 14 weeks ago?

I wish I knew more about how much work the last couple of weeks would be. Although I was half expecting it, I did not think the last few weeks would take up most of my free time. I had a lot of final projects and papers to write as well as studying for my finals.

Study Habits

  • How much time do you spend studying for each class now vs. at the beginning of the semester?

At the beginning of the semester, I would study for about an hour on average for each class. Now, I think that I’ve also been spending about an hour studying per class. I think I have been pretty consistent with studying.

  • How have your study habits changed?

I think that my study habits have stayed the same, besides the time management side of it. I have still been using the same resources and using the same amount of time.

  • Tell us about a resource that you have used/learned about this semester that will assist you next semester.

This semester I learned about the writing center and I think it will be a big help next semester. I did not use this resource this semester although I wish I did and I am excited to get the help for my next classes.

  • What study habits/techniques will you use going into next semester?

Next semester I am hoping to continue improving my time management skills. I will also continue to work in the library between classes. I will make flashcards and use Quizlet to help me study. Telling my family about what I am learning will also help me to study.

Health Professions Learning Community

  • This semester you were enrolled in at least SOC 201S, and HLTH 101. Many of you were also enrolled in CHEM 105N and CHEM 106N, and some of you were enrolled in HIST 104H with Professor White.
    • On the surface these classes do not appear to be connected; however this semester each professor was intentional about drawing connections between content, and subjects discussed. Discuss the ways in which  these courses are tied together.

Sociology has a lot connected to health because people’s social positions and roles can affect their health. History and sociology are related because sociology can help to explain and examine the past of the US and its people. Chemistry and chem lab can be related to health because in most of the healthcare positions we have learned about, chemistry is necessary in the field.

Parallel Plan

  1. This semester we had presentations from different majors in the College of Health Sciences as well as from different majors on campus. This was to give you an idea for possible parallel majors to your current intended major.
  • Which two other majors would you be most interested in? Why?

One other major that I was interested in was the Nuclear Medicine Technology major. This one was interesting to me because it was a field in which there may be more consistent hours in which I would still be able to work in a hospital to help people. Another major that I liked was the Speech-Language Pathology and Audiology major. I found this one interesting because it was something I never thought about before and it seems very intricate.

  • What benefit is there to having a parallel plan (or two) in place?

It is always good to have a parallel plan in case you find out that you don’t truly love the major you are in currently. It is important to have a backup plan.

  • How could one or both of these two majors benefit your current intended major?

The Nuclear Medicine Technology major benefits my Nursing major because they work together in hospitals all the time. They are connected with many patients. Also, the same goes for the Speech-Language Pathology and Audiology major. Both of these majors are connected to nursing in different ways, but with both, nurses will be working with them.
