My diversity experience was through my SPED 406 course. This course introduced the world of special education to me. Special education involves developing specially designed instructional assessments and techniques for students with different types of disabilities: learning, emotional, behavioral, etc. In the course, we discussed inclusion of students with disabilities into classrooms with students with no disabilities and how to foster a productive learning environment for every student.
This is something I will make sure to continue to advocate for. All students want to succeed and it is only fair that educators provide students with that path.
The aspect of people with disabilities is something that is important today. People believe that a person will disabilities is less capable of doing tasks than someone without disabilities. There tends to be a lower standard for people with disabilities. This should not be the case. If you believe a certain groupĀ will perform at a lower level then that is what they will do. Everyone should be held to the same high standard. This is true in schools and in the professional world. We as a society need to realize that people with special needs are just like the rest of us. We all want to be apart of something so, we need to build a strong community involving everyone.
