At Old Dominion University there are many different type of majors for students attending that vary greatly. The major I am personally going for is Game Graphics and Design. This entry is about how some majors can relate back to cybersecurity despite not seeming to have any relevance for it.
Starting with my own major, Game Graphics and Design, this major is about understanding the development of video games and understanding what a consumer might want, while also developing something relating to it. The way this major might relate to cybersecurity is more obvious than one might expect, that being this major also includes understanding why cybersecurity is so important. Big companies deal with constant issues like cyberattacks on their websites and firewalls. A popular game might end up being part of a DDOS attack, where it will shut down it’s servers. Understanding how these attacks work would help me in my development for game design as I will be able to think of ways to avoid this issue from showing its head.
The next major would be computer engineering. I have a friend who is going into this major. Computer Engineering is mainly about computer hardware and software, and what is needed to either improve on existing protection or creating better protection from scratch. This major relates to cybersecurity since with this protecting that is being learnt, these hardware and software for programs and computers can provide simple protection from any type of online attack, which provides protection from online attacks.
Another major at Old Dominion University that relates back to cybersecurity is the Advances Engineering Certificate in Cyber Systems Security. This degree revolves around cybersecurity as it provides a thorough understanding of the cyber security threats faced by most systems. These systems can be computer related, network related, even IT related. Cybersecurity is for dealing with any type of online/cyber attack for companies or websites, which is what this degree also represents due to the needed knowledge of cyber security.
One last major here at Old Dominion University that relates to cybersecurity is Computer Science. This is a major focused around software development. This is critical for Cybersecurity since this major requiring the understanding of software development is required, which can include the security part of software development. Since Cybersecurity is essentially software security, it is an easy way to see how Computer Science requires the knowledge of Cybersecurity knowledge.
