CYSE 201S – Cybersecurity

Career Paper

Software engineers in definition is a branch of computer science that focuses on the maintaining and development of software applications while also testing and building software for users. (Michigan Technological University 2023) Software engineer is a strong career to have in the cybersecurity field as they support and are the backbone of the cybersecurity space. With the help of coding and bug fixing, the cybersecurity field remains a strong force against cybercriminals and other cyber threats. However, it is important to consider the social sciences as well with the career field and how they relate to both the job, data gathering, and cybersecurity in general.

Software engineering through the help of sociology can greatly help with cybersecurity. With the analysis of the network, network analysis allows software engineers to study the current trends and various online communities that are engaging in behaviors. With the help of software engineers, they are able to gather information of online communities who are posing various cyber threats online. Software engineers are also able to engage in diffusion with network analysis, giving them the availability to trace and log aspects of an online community and in cybersecurity, is able to predict when an attack may occur and even trace the attacker as well before it happens. (Applied Worldwide 2023

Software engineers, while aiding with cyber forensics with data collection and investigation of groups, must stay dated with the current cyber threats with the software they develop. As time goes by, cyber threats only get bigger and more advanced and software engineers work with computer scientists and other teams to keep systems update and software ready against new and dangerous cyber threats. With computer networks and other aspects that cybersecurity professionals use, the team must work on updating and implementing new strategies in code to prevent an attack on company systems while maintaining the current software. (Rice University 2022)

Lastly, software engineers work with social engineering. Through Social Software Engineering (SSE), social aspects are put into place with software that is developed for community centered projects that other users and people can use. Engineers create and utilize Privacy-aware Information Systems, which lets the user know that their data is being utilized in an ethical manner instead of being illegally sold or gathered, and that their data is protected through this system. With this system in place, not only does this aid and protect user privacy data and other groups, but also allows software engineers to use the data gained as well in order to improve quality and continue to work on the software with more user feedback. These systems are also always changing as engineers design new and more effective ways of combatting and handling cyber threats from causing a potential data leak of personal information and geographical information through real options theory. Along with this, it is also noted that the software in question is maintained and that it offers protection always against cyber threats online. (Vgena et al,.)

In conclusion, software engineers have a lot more in common with social sciences. With user interest in mind, software engineers shape and create software and programs that respect user privacy while also maintaining and protecting the data gained from the use of privacy aware systems. Software engineers also must stay up to date always as society moves forward as well, bringing in various other cyber threats that must be dealt with to prevent an attack on their systems. With being able to also gain data online through networking and sociology, cybersecurity teams and software remain stable and ready for use when a cyber threat is either about to attack or just for preparation, serving as a strong backbone to the cybersecurity field.
