Cybersecurity Science Principles

Cybersecurity is an ever-growing field that continues to get larger and larger with each day that passes, however there are important principles to follow while in the field. These principles are: Objectively, Parsimony, Empiricism, Ethical Neutrality, and Determinism. With these principles combined, they aid fully in understanding and detecting various risks and behaviors earlier and allows a clearer view when analyzing. (CYSE 201S Slides)

With cybersecurity, knowledge is a key point to have. Some companies even have knowledge bases for IT and Cybersecurity teams to use. When used, these teams use the principle of Objectively, which allows them to study and understand the knowledge provided without interfering with any opinions and that knowledge provided to them follows the same route. (CYSE 201S Slides)

Parsimony is very important to cybersecurity when it comes to explaining. In a knowledge base, having the information be short and easy to provide can help the customer and the employee with processing and making tasks take less longer. By keeping explanations simple and cohesive, employees can have an easier digestion of information and for the user to understand fully as not everyone knows complex terms. (CYSE 201S Slides)

Empiricism emphasizes that we should only have knowledge from our senses and observations, which ties in well with objectively. This means that in knowledge, information should not have any opinions or potentially, any beliefs had. This principle helps especially well with keeping information true and knowledge safe from any outside information that is not trustworthy. (CYSE 201S Slides)

Ethical Neutrality in cybersecurity is a very important aspect when considering ethics in the field like for example, using your computer at work to hack into other computers to steal information or using your computer to get into a user’s account through a ticket by asking for their login information. Standards are key and it is always important to remember that ethics are always an important role in the field of cybersecurity. (CYSE 201S Slides)

Lastly, Determinism. Determinism is another very important aspect to cybersecurity and plays a key role with parsimony, which delves into behaviors of humans and why we do things. When looking from a cybersecurity point of view at an example, malicious code, understanding why and how it executes and figuring out the intention of why this code is made is all part of determinism. (CYSE 201S Slides)

In summary, these key principles are extremely important to the field of cybersecurity. Without these principles in mind, the career field would be unstable, and knowledge would be extremely limited and numerous beliefs and opinions would sneak in through information. With these principles enforced however, information in the cybersecurity field stays protected and allows for quick work on solving and preventing cyber threats from getting into systems.
