Changing Study Habits
Transitioning to college from high school can sometimes be difficult for some, especially when it comes to doing work. Turning my work in on time, paying attention in class and having good study habits helped me succeed through high school. However, now I realize that some of my study habits need some improvement for college. Some changes that I will make to help me study better are managing my time, having a designated study area and joining a study group.
To start off, time management is key to studying for anybody. Studying last minute will make me feel rushed and overwhelmed by all the material for that class. Creating time for me to study will help reduce stress and not have all that weight on my shoulders. Doing my work on time will also give me some free time to myself. I need time to relax and have a couple of hours to myself, and I’ll never get that if I procrastinate all the time. Getting my work done will free up so much space and time for me to do what I want. Lastly, time management will improve my self-discipline. Self-discipline is a skill that will help me learn to achieve my goals without distractions.
Next, having a dedicated study area will be a change to my study habits. Lying in my bed, turning the TV on and eating snacks with my notes in front of me are usually part of my study environment. Studying that way hasn’t always been beneficial because TV almost always distracts me. Having a quiet and peaceful place to study would be the best way to get my work completed. Also, being comfortable is an important factor involving my study area. Honestly, the more comfortable someone is, the more productive he or she will be.
Lastly, having a group to study with would make things easier. Research shows that students usually learn better working with a group than working alone. Also, other students could have the answers to questions I have. Receiving feedback is another helpful benefit for working in groups. Obtaining opinions and comments from others could help me understand what I did wrong and how I can learn from my mistakes. Having someone with a different viewpoint is another helpful benefit. I will only see my perspective of things studying alone; however, if I’m with a group of other students, I’m positive I’ll receive a variety of ideas from other people.
In conclusion, changing my study habits can improve how I am as a student. Managing my time will help me accomplish what needs to be done along with being stress-free. Having a dedicated study area will reduce distractions and help me complete the task. In addition, joining a study group will make me have a better understanding of information and help me learn right from wrong. Developing effective study skills overall can save me plenty of time in the future. These changes will help me achieve the goals that I want to accomplish.
